One of Siegburg’s most striking landmarks is Michaelsberg: the former abbey is a prominent feature of the city’s skyline. The circular route around Michaelsberg is 1,100 metres long, step-free and paved. Its fixed length offers a practical guide when planning a walk into your day.

Abbey, Fortifications and Rose Garden

The Benedictine abbey was founded in 1064 by Anno II, Archbishop of Cologne. Several fires destroyed the original building in the 18th century; the Baroque complex that still stands today was built afterwards. Michaelsberg’s medieval fortifications also include the Johannistürmchen. A former rampart walk leads from the Johannesgarten to the old watchtower and offers views of Siegburg and its surroundings.

The Rose Garden was restored on a former fortification terrace. Roses of different varieties and cultivars grow in flower beds and on trellises; benches invite you to sit, look around and linger. The garden adds its own distinctive touch alongside the abbey and fortifications: here, you can take time to appreciate the garden’s design and the variety of roses.

City History, Pottery and Music

The permanent exhibition at the Siegburg City Museum presents the city’s history from prehistoric times to the present day. One special topic is Siegburg’s luxury pottery: the exhibition notes that it was displayed in glass cases at European royal courts. The city’s history can therefore be encountered not only in its buildings but also in the museum’s collection.

The Music Workshop adds another cultural focus. It explores the life and work of Engelbert Humperdinck, the composer born in Siegburg. Public guided tours are offered in and around Siegburg, with general and themed itineraries. Topics range from history, culture and architecture to breweries, pubs and the city’s sweet treats. This allows you to choose a tour that focuses on your particular interests.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

From Siegburg, hikers can start the first stage of the Natursteig Sieg trail. The Sieg cycle route offers a different experience: it passes through green floodplain landscapes and gives cyclists the chance to enjoy nature at a leisurely pace. The two activities cater to different preferences: a hiking stage on foot or experiencing nature by bike.

The attractions in Siegburg bring these different interests to life. If your trip combines a variety of interests, you can weigh up museum and tour topics, the Rose Garden and outdoor activities. Your preferred mix is a useful starting point when choosing accommodation.

The Rhein-Sieg district: a wider perspective

Looking beyond the city, the Rhein-Sieg district offers a wider perspective. Four regions are relevant to tourism there: the Siebengebirge, the Sieg Valley, the Bergisches Land and the Rhein-Voreifel region. Hiking options in the Rhein-Sieg district include the certified quality trails Natursteig Sieg, Bergischer Weg and Rheinsteig. For cycling, there are tourist routes through varied natural and cultural landscapes that appeal to leisure cyclists, sporty riders and e-bike users. The Rhein-Sieg district is also home to Wahner Heide, a local recreation area and popular day-trip destination. Visitors to its nature reserve should stay on the marked paths.
