The Lückerath War Memorial bears the year 1859. On 25 March 1998, it was added to the list of historic monuments of the city of Bergisch Gladbach under reference number 05378004-A0158. The dates mark different points in time: 1859 is the year given for the monument, while 1998 is the date it was listed.

Memorial History in Lückerath

The memorial in Lückerath began as a wayside cross, erected in 1859 at the intersection of Lückerather Weg and Am Fürstenbrünnchen. It was later expanded into a memorial to the men of Lückerath who fell in the First World War. Two red sandstone wings bear the names of 15 fallen soldiers. After being moved to its current location, it was dedicated there on 3 June 1972. Its construction, expansion and dedication tell different chapters of this history.

The Heiliges Pützchen, also called the holy spring, is part of the area’s history too. It has been permanently sealed since 1921 because its water was contaminated with heavy metals and was no longer fit to drink. It is therefore not suitable as a source of drinking water.

Parkland and Stream Landscape

The park at Am Fürstenbrünnchen includes traditional orchards and wooded areas. Paths and benches are also part of the park; check their condition before visiting in person. The combination of meadows and wooded areas gives the landscape more definition than a simple description of green space would.

A section of the Milchbornbach, also known as the Saaler Mühlenbach, runs parallel to Am Fürstenbrünnchen road. Along a short stretch, the stream flows in a very natural state through a beech grove. Those interested in the landscape can take in both the described relationship between the stream and the road and its natural course through the beech grove.

Walking Routes and Other Destinations

Route 4 of the Cologne Eifel Association is also known as the Erna-Schreiber-Weg. It runs from Königsforst through several stops to Ober-Lückerath and onward towards Lindlar. The places named give the walk a clear direction and show that it is a route with several stops.

Culture in the Wider Destination of Bergisch Gladbach

The wider destination of Bergisch Gladbach offers other cultural attractions. At the LVR Industrial Museum, Alte Dombach Paper Mill, visitors can discover how paper has been made over the centuries, first through laborious manual work and later industrially. The poetry trail comprises six steles, which have stood since 2011 between the source of the Strunde in Bergisch Gladbach-Herrenstrunden and the Alte Dombach Paper Museum.

Two poetry editions are published each year along the poetry trail. Each is launched with a walk involving the public and a programme of accompanying events featuring music or performance. Check the current programme for specific dates. At the Bergisches Museum in Bensberg, family days, school workshops, guided tours and lectures introduce traditional crafts. The Kunstmuseum Villa Zanders regularly presents temporary exhibitions, mainly of contemporary art, and its collection focuses in particular on art made from paper.

Architecture is also one of the subjects to explore in Bergisch Gladbach: Gottfried Böhm designed the Bergischer Löwe, the Herz-Jesu-Kirche in Schildgen, the Bethanien children’s village and Bensberg Town Hall. Bus route 426 runs to the Alte Dombach Paper Mill from the nearest S-Bahn station, Bergisch Gladbach, in the direction of Wipperfürth, stopping at Alte Dombach. Check the connection before travelling.
