Netphen combines cultural attractions with practical starting points for hiking and cycling tours. For planning, it helps to make one simple decision first: should a visit to a museum or event venue shape your stay, or are the Celtic Trail and cycling your main focus? The different route starting points can also help you choose where to stay.

Culture at the museum and the Old Fire Station

On 14 February 2024, the town of Netphen described the Museum Netpherland as featuring a permanent exhibition about the Netpherland spread over three floors, as well as special exhibitions on specific themes. The two formats offer different perspectives: the permanent exhibition focuses on the Netpherland, while each special exhibition explores its own subject. If a particular exhibition is the main reason for your visit, check the latest information in advance.

The Old Fire Station on St. Peter’s Square in Netphen is a living monument, with space for events and gatherings across three floors. These include concerts, readings, weddings, celebrations, seminars and workshops—cultural events as well as private celebrations and work-related activities. This sets the building apart from a museum visit: the focus here is on individual events and gatherings. If you are planning to attend a concert or reading, check the relevant programme.

Hiking and cycling from different starting points

The Leimbachtal hiking car park is the common start and end point for the Netphen Celtic Trail. The trail climbs to the summit of the Alte Burg, giving route planning a clearly defined destination. From Siegen, take bus route R27 to the Netphen Altwiese stop, then walk 400 metres to the car park. Check the current timetable before travelling. There are plenty of free parking spaces at the hiking car park; as availability can change, it is a good idea to check the situation again before setting out.

For cycling, another starting point is in the Netphen district of Brauersdorf: you can join the Netphen cycling circuit from the Obernautalsperre hiking car park. The SĂĽdwestfalen cycling network also connects towns and places of interest, making Netphen a suitable base for cycling tours in the surrounding area. You can choose between direct access to the cycling circuit and the wider network of routes in the area. Whether hiking the Celtic Trail or cycling is your priority can therefore also inform your search for accommodation.

More places to explore in the wider Siegen-Wittgenstein destination

Other places in the wider Siegen-Wittgenstein destination each offer their own highlights. In Freudenberg, the Südwestfälische Freilichtbühne’s programme includes theatre for children and adults. At Ginsburg Castle, the viewing platform on the reconstructed keep offers sweeping panoramic views. The castle is also a notable point on the Rothaarsteig and a regular destination for hikers, nature lovers and local history enthusiasts. The Sauerland-Rothaargebirge Nature Park named Ginsburg Castle one of its gems in 2018.

KulturPur is a five-day international music and theatre festival held at Whitsun on the Giller in the Rothaargebirge. Check the festival dates when planning your trip. For art lovers, the WaldSkulpturenWeg runs between Bad Berleburg in the Siegen-Wittgenstein district and Schmallenberg in the Hochsauerland district. It is just under 23 kilometres long and features eleven works of art. Another option is the 17.02-kilometre regional Eder-Quellen-Tour cycling route in ErndtebrĂĽck. This gives you a choice of different interests within the wider destination: a route featuring artworks or a trail explicitly designated as a cycling tour.
