Discover Lengerich: Canyon, Hiking Trails and Culture
Accommodation in Lengerich
Lengerich combines striking landscapes with history that can be seen in a variety of places: circular trails lead to the canyon and around the quarry, while the museum, town church and historic landmarks reveal other sides of the town. This gives you several options when planning your trip – from hiking through the countryside to exploring culture and technology.
Hiking trails around the canyon and quarry
The “Canyon Blick” Teutoschleife is an 11-kilometre circular hiking trail between Lengerich and Leeden that leads to the Canyon nature reserve. It has been awarded the German Hiking Seal and is part of the Tecklenburger Land Premium Hiking Region. The Canyon Tour is shorter: this approximately five-kilometre premium walking trail runs around the canyon and offers three viewing platforms as well as various views of the protected area. Comparing their lengths makes the difference in scale between the two routes clear; both feature the canyon as their landscape focus.
Another route covers eight kilometres around the Lengerich quarry. Along the trail, you will find a wide variety of plants and striking limestone walls. Information panels explain the landscape around the quarry in the TERRA.vita Nature and Geopark. This means you can choose not only the Canyon Tour but also a circular hike with its own landscape focus and information stops.
Culture, technology and history
The Westphalian Field Railway Museum in Lengerich documents the history of field railway transport and presents an extensive collection. There is also a short ride on a restored field railway. A visit to the museum therefore combines learning about transport history with a trip on a historic railway.
The nave of the Evangelical Town Church in Lengerich was completed in 1497 in the late Gothic style as a Westphalian hall church. Another landmark of the town’s history is the Jewish cemetery: it is the only surviving evidence of the former Jewish community and Jewish life in Lengerich; its history dates back to the 18th century. The Wechte megalithic tomb also offers a glimpse into the past. It is about 4,000 years old, was discovered in 1927 and has been partially reconstructed.
The Old Railway Tunnel is associated with a dark chapter in history. From March 1944 until shortly before the end of the war, it was an outlying camp of the Neuengamme concentration camp near Hamburg, under the code name “Rebhuhn” (“Partridge”). The tunnel is not accessible because much of it is in a dilapidated condition, so its history cannot be explored with a visit inside.
The former Haus Vortlage manor was first mentioned in the 13th century. The private estate includes a mill, an oak avenue, a moat and a main house; Haus Vortlage is also a listed monument, the headquarters of an association, a foundation and a meeting place. The Heimathaus Haus Beccard focuses on exhibits about life and work in a small town with a rural character. Visits are possible by appointment.
Plan your cycling route and arrival
A long-distance route also leads to the town by bike: the Friedensroute is a cycling loop between MĂĽnster and OsnabrĂĽck that goes directly into Lengerich town centre. It is certified as a four-star ADFC Quality Cycling Route. Lengerich is also accessible by train; the station is about 2.5 kilometres from the town centre, and there is also a bus connection.
When choosing accommodation, the focus of your plans can help you decide: would you mainly like to explore the circular trails and countryside, or include cultural attractions and the town centre? The hiking and cycling routes offer different experiences, while train and bus connections can help you plan your arrival. This lets you shape your trip around the activities that interest you in Lengerich.
