Maria Laach brings together the history of a monastic complex and the volcanic landscape of the Eastern Eifel. The 280 km-long German Volcano Route begins in the Maria Laach district. Along its route are 39 tourist-accessible geological, cultural-historical and industrial-historical natural and cultural monuments relating to Eifel volcanism. Lake Laach also shapes the area: it is the most geologically significant centre of the Volcanic Eastern Eifel. The lake and the surrounding landscape are a nature reserve.

Monastery History and Architecture

The monastery complex was built from 1093 onwards, right on the lakeshore. It was founded by Count Palatine Henry II and his wife Adelheid. A distinctive feature of the abbey church is the Paradies: an almost square atrium dating from the 13th century, with open arcades. It is the only surviving atrium-paradise north of the Alps. The abbey church is open daily for participation in prayer services and for visits; check the latest opening information before travelling. The abbey’s old Jesuit library offers insights into the abbey’s art.

The Lake, Lakeside Path and Pilgrimage Route

The roughly 2.1 km section of the circular path around Lake Laach starts at the car park at Maria Laach Abbey, first passing the boat rental and then following the lakeshore to the campsite. Before your visit, check the latest information on access to this section of the path. Pedal boats and rowing boats can be rented about five minutes from the abbey’s visitor car park. Availability may vary depending on the season or weather; check in advance whether rentals are available.

Pilgrims can also choose Maria Laach as their destination. The Eifel Pilgrimage Route leads from Ahrweiler to Maria Laach via Schalkenbach, Oberdürenbach, Hain, Galenberg and Wehr. In addition, an ecumenical women’s pilgrimage walk from Ahrweiler to Maria Laach is offered every year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day. If you are planning to join this walk, check the dates and arrangements for the relevant year.

Discoveries for Children and Adults

There are two activities at the monastery, each with a different focus. The 300 m-long Stone Experience Trail along the monastery wall teaches children about volcanism through puzzles and child-friendly information panels. The Maria Laach Monastery Rally starts at the tourist information office in the large car park by Lake Laach. Through solving puzzles, estimating, planning and improvising, children and adults get to know the monastery. This offers both a nature-focused perspective and a chance to explore the monastery together.

When choosing accommodation, it helps to first decide what you would like to focus on during your trip: Would you like to concentrate mainly on the monastery’s history and architecture, spend time by the lake and on the lakeside path, or discover the puzzle activities with children? These experiences offer different ways to shape your stay and can help you tailor your accommodation search in Maria Laach to your own travel plans.
