Sierscheid lies in the northern Eifel at an elevation of around 400 metres. Fields surround the village on three sides, with an extensive woodland area to the north. The Ahr is also a local landmark: it lies below Sierscheid and can be reached on foot from the village. The contrast between open fields and woodland is therefore part of the immediate landscape.

Sierscheid is a well-preserved clustered village with characteristic farmsteads. By the end of 2016, almost all of them had been restored in accordance with heritage conservation standards. The village’s layout adds a distinct settlement pattern shaped by its farmsteads to the surrounding landscape.

Hiking the AhrSteig and Panorama Trail

The AhrSteig passes Sierscheid on its way from Insul via Dümpelhardt to Liers. Its fourth stage is 17.4 kilometres long and runs from Insul via Sierscheid, Dümpelhardt, Liers and Linder Höhe to Kreuzberg. The full AhrSteig trail is around 100 kilometres long, stretching from the source of the Ahr to its mouth. From Sierscheid, the AhrSteig offers descents either towards Schuld or towards Liers and the Ahr.

Stage 4 is marked in both directions with the blue AhrSteig logo. On the ascent towards Dümpelhardt, it passes sparse heathland vegetation; after that, the route continues through meadows and woodland into the Liersbach valley. This stage therefore alternates between open and wooded sections and the valley landscape.

The Panorama Trail around Dümpelhardt is just under three kilometres long and easy to walk. It starts at the wayside cross above St Maternus Chapel in Sierscheid. From Dümpelhardt, the view stretches across Eifel meadows and forests to the upper Ahr valley; the Nürburg also comes into view along the Panorama Trail. These offer different options for planning a day out: a short, easy walk or a considerably longer stage of the AhrSteig.

Village history and local traditions

St Maternus Chapel is a simple, single-nave building, first constructed around 1730. Later renovations include work carried out in 2024. Sierscheid itself was first mentioned in 1290 and at the time belonged to the Electoral Cologne district of Nürburg. The chapel and the village’s history thus offer two different perspectives on its past.

Local customs include a St Martin’s procession, lighting a St Martin’s bonfire and putting up a maypole in May. Sierscheid traditionally celebrates its village festival on the third weekend in September. These regular events in the annual calendar complement the hikes with insights into the village’s community life.

Those wishing to explore regional history beyond Sierscheid can visit the Ahrweiler District Archive in the destination of Ahrweiler, a local history resource and advisory centre for historical and local heritage questions about the region.
