An official cycling route leads towards Giershausen; remains of the palisades of a motte were discovered in the village centre. The landscape of the Birnbach Valley, the 16th-century Kraamer Mill and a possible detour to Mehren round out the picture. Cycling, nature and history offer different starting points for a stay. If you are looking for accommodation, you can choose according to the experiences that matter to you on your trip.

Cycling between the heights and the valley

An official 15-kilometre cycling route runs between the Birnbach and Mehrbach valleys towards Giershausen. It crosses the Giershausen heights and follows a connecting road at an elevation of about 280 metres. Varied vegetation and beautiful views shape this stretch. Beyond Giershausen, the route descends towards the Birnbach Valley. This makes it possible to experience the high ground and the valley as distinct landscapes on the same tour. The route’s length and the change between high ground and valley provide a concrete basis for planning the ride as part of your stay.

In the Birnbach Valley, the path is narrow and somewhat difficult to ride. Cyclists should not ride side by side there. Official Tour 3 starts at the car park by the Hilkhausen community centre.

Landscape, wildlife and a natural monument

In the Birnbach Valley, a stream winds through natural meadows, while rocky outcrops appear along the roadside. Red kites and other birds of prey are often seen in the route’s natural surroundings. Wildlife watching is therefore another specific focus to choose alongside the landscape.

In Adorf-Seifen stands a natural monument: a hornbeam arch more than 200 years old, considered unique of its kind. It offers a distinct natural highlight alongside the valley scenery and birdwatching.

Village location and historic sites

Giershausen lies between Weyerbusch and Flammersfeld on Federal Highway 256, also known here as the Historic Raiffeisen Road. Archaeological excavations in the village centre uncovered remains of the palisades of a motte, considered an early Carolingian refuge fortification. The find points to an early chapter in the village’s history.

The 16th-century Kraamer Mill offers another historical connection: the cycling route passes by it, and its millpond is still clearly visible. A detour leads to Mehren, a half-timbered village that is partly protected as a historic monument. Sights there include a Romanesque church and a historic village jail. Mehren thus offers a different cultural highlight from the archaeological find in the village centre and the mill along the route.

A rest stop and finding accommodation

For a break along the route, the Stähler and Heisterholz establishments in Hemmelzen are options. If you want to plan a stop there in advance, check the latest information beforehand.

For those interested in culture, the find in the village centre, the mill and the detour to Mehren offer specific points of interest. You can use the type of stay you have in mind to guide your accommodation search.
