Helmenzen offers two specific ways to discover the village: the “From Valley to Valley” cycling tour and local history at the museum barn. The museum collects regional tools and household items. This gives you a choice when planning your trip: explore the valleys by bike or learn about the region’s history.

Cycle through stream valleys and woodland

The cycling tour starts at the hiking car park by the museum barn. The route first descends through woodland and meadows to the Ölfener Bach valley. Numerous small valleys give the route’s landscape a particularly varied character. On the way back to Helmenzen, the route passes through the stream valleys of Busenhausen and Kettenhausen. The contrast between the descent through woodland and meadows and the stream valleys on the return journey brings the tour’s landscape character to life.

On the way back, near Kettenhausen, you’ll also find the “Affenschaukel” (Monkey Swing), a small, deep road valley. Riding through it is compared to the rocking motion of a ship. When planning your route, check for any temporary detours before setting off.

Local history at the museum barn

The Helmenzen museum barn is a local history museum that collects regional tools and household items. Helmenzen was first mentioned in writing in 1459. Historically, the village belonged to the parish of Altenkirchen and the County of Sayn; the court of the Altenkirchen district was also located here. The parish, county and court reflect different historical connections: religious affiliation, territorial status and the location of the court at the time.

Visits for groups can be arranged at any time; check the museum’s current operating status when making plans. The museum barn can be reached by public bus followed by a short walk. Check services and stops before your visit.
