Ebertsheim: Hiking, the Eisbach and Church Art
Accommodation in Ebertsheim
Ebertsheim brings together specific hiking routes, nature along the Eisbach and distinctive details from the town’s history. The figure-eight Hab-8 trail connects the districts of Ebertsheim and Rodenbach; along the Eisbach, there is a renaturation area with a water play area. St. Stephen’s Church adds a cultural highlight with a late Gothic sundial and a painting by Johann Adam Schlesinger. These different themes can help guide you when choosing accommodation as you plan your trip.
Hiking trails with specific distances
The Hab-8 trail is eight kilometers long and connects the districts of Ebertsheim and Rodenbach in a figure-eight shape. You can divide it into a 2.5-kilometer Rodenbach section and a 5.5-kilometer Ebertsheim section. This lets you compare the stated total distance with two sections of different lengths.
At 9.6 kilometers, the Kneipp Church Hiking Trail is another route with a specific stated distance. It is therefore 1.6 kilometers longer than the Hab-8 trail. These two distances can help you estimate how far you plan to walk during your days in Ebertsheim. Ebertsheim station is designated as a hiking station for local hiking routes.
Nature and getting your bearings along the Eisbach
The Ebertsheim renaturation area along the Eisbach includes a water play area with water play equipment. There are no restroom facilities in the area. More than 20 bird species have been recorded along the Eisbach; frogs and newts are also associated with the area. These different aspects of nature range from observing wildlife to playing in the water, without making them the same focus of a visit.
The municipality of Ebertsheim also includes the streams associated with it: the Eisbach, Seltenbach and Rodenbach. Species-rich calcareous grasslands can be found around Ebertsheim, including on Grünstadter Berg. The area’s natural features therefore include both waterways and open, species-rich grasslands.
There is one specific restriction when arriving by car: please do not continue along the service road at the end of Wassergasse. Parking is available at the station car park, about 500 meters away. Also bear in mind that there are no restroom facilities in the renaturation area.
Church art and Ebertsheim sandstone
Beside the south portal of St. Stephen’s Church, a late Gothic sundial is carved into a block of sandstone. Inside the church is the painting “Martin Luther with a Swan” by Johann Adam Schlesinger. These two distinct features—the sundial at the portal and the painting inside—give the church its own cultural character.
Ebertsheim sandstone was used to build and repair churches and buildings in Worms, Mannheim and other places in the Vorderpfalz region.
Getting here and places to eat
Ebertsheim has rail connections. Worms and Neustadt an der Weinstraße can be reached by train in less time than Ludwigshafen and Mannheim. It is advisable to check the timetable for your specific travel dates. A cycle route runs along the L 395 in the direction of Ebertsheim-Eisenberg.
Gasthaus Gutfrucht is a country inn serving regional cuisine and a place for hikers to stop in Ebertsheim. It complements the hiking and nature themes with an option for a meal or refreshment. When choosing accommodation, you can use the planned focus of your stay—hiking, nature along the Eisbach or culture—as a guide for planning your trip.
