Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg combines striking rocky landscapes with castle ruins, art and historic buildings. The Rheingrafenstein landmark is a reminder of a turbulent past; trails through valleys, forests, vineyards and rocky terrain offer a variety of ways to spend active days. There is also plenty to discover culturally, from the Stone Sculpture Museum to the fortified church.

Discover hiking trails and rock formations

The 3x3 Salinental area offers nine hiking trails of varying lengths and difficulty levels around Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg. They lead through river valleys, meadows, forests, vineyards and rocky landscapes. When planning a day out, you can therefore take into account the trail length and difficulty level, as well as the landscapes you would like to experience along the way.

At the Rotenfels, a hiking trail runs along the entire edge of the massif. The heavily fissured rock face offers almost 150 metres of climbable height; climbing routes pass over scree gullies, chimneys, towers, fractured walls and steep slopes. Climbing restrictions apply during nature conservation closure periods. If you want to hike to the Rheingrafenstein Castle ruins, you can reach them via the Specker Bridge in the Ebernburg district during the winter period when the ferry is not operating.

Castle ruins, art and architectural history

The Rheingrafenstein Castle ruins are a landmark of the town. French troops under Louis XIV blew up the castle in 1689; it has been a ruin ever since. Its history can be combined with an outing to explore the area's art and architectural history.

The Stone Sculpture Museum and Park opened on 14 August 2010 in the Ebernburg district, not far from the Rotenfels. Japanese architect Tadao Ando designed the museum, where works by the artist duo Kubach-Wilmsen are on display. The fortified church is the oldest surviving church in the town and was first mentioned in 1212.

The buildings, too, tell different stories: the West graduation tower is 104 metres long and ten metres high; it was renovated in 2009. The Kurmittelhaus is a half-timbered building dating from 1910/11, built in a Baroque-inspired Art Nouveau style. Alongside hiking, a stay here offers striking architectural styles and their historical contexts to explore.

Nature, brine and regional cuisine

The Lebendige Nahe Nature Station introduces visitors to the region's flora and fauna. In species-appropriate terrariums, it displays native snakes, lizards, frogs, toads and newts. Its year-round programme includes exhibitions, seminars, talks, guided tours and environmental education activities for groups. This offers a different way to experience nature than hiking through the landscape.

During the summer months from May to September, the outdoor swimming pool offers a thermal brine pool at 30°C, weather permitting. It is located next to the extended spa gardens and close to the Nahe Cycle Route. Dining options vary by season and range from international cuisine to regional dishes from local wineries.

Plan your trip and choose accommodation

The hand-operated Nahe ferry at the spa gardens connects Bad Münster with the Huttental from Easter until early November. From there, hiking trails lead to the Rheingrafenstein and the Kuhberg in Bad Kreuznach. If you plan to take the ferry, check the ferry schedule for your visit. In the Ebernburg district, you can get around on foot via a staircase or travel by car; by car, you have to drive through the town.

When looking for accommodation, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your stay: hiking and rock formations, art and history, or nature. This lets you match your accommodation to the excursions you actually want to take, rather than simply looking for the longest possible list of options.
