Hasborn brings together an ancient oak grove in the town centre, hiking trails, church architecture and traces of a historic long-distance road. The town appeals to travellers who want to combine nature and culture: the oak grove provides a habitat for various animal species, while churches and historic sites offer insights into local history. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on trails and nature or on architecture and history.

The oak grove in the heart of town

The Hasborn Oak Grove covers 7,000 square metres; some of its trees are up to 350 years old. It lies in the centre of Hasborn in a park-like setting among houses, a church, a school and sports facilities. Bats, squirrels and stag beetles find a habitat here. The oak grove is considered the district’s last remaining wood pasture and its oldest natural monument. Its ancient trees and its setting within the built-up town give this natural area a distinctive character.

The Hasborn Sauerbrunnen lies between Hasborn and Oberscheidweiler. The iron-rich spring owes its sour taste to naturally occurring carbon dioxide of volcanic origin. It adds a geological feature to the natural attractions around the town.

Hiking trails and longer routes

The 2-Bäche-Pfad and the Devonroute run partly through Hasborn. The Pfarrsteig Greimerath also lies close to the town: this route, around 17 kilometres long, connects Greimerath, Willwerscheid and Hasborn. The surrounding area also offers opportunities for longer tours through the Vulkaneifel, with views across the region’s unspoilt landscape. The trails therefore offer different ways to plan your route: some pass through Hasborn, while others connect several towns over a longer distance.

Road access is a practical consideration when travelling to Hasborn: the town can be reached via the A1 and the regional road between Trier and Koblenz. If your trip is focused on touring, you can take your preferred destinations and trails into account when choosing where to stay.

Churches and local history

St. Rochus Chapel serves as a meeting place for art and culture and as a venue for exhibitions and concerts. The present-day chapel was built in 1775, following an earlier chapel in Hasborn. If you want to plan your visit around a particular concert or exhibition, check the latest dates in advance.

The church architecture also offers some specific details: Hasborn Church has an octagonal floor plan, with a decagonal chancel adjoining it. Its three bells were cast by the Eifeler Bronze-Glockengießerei Johannes Mark in Brockscheid. The modern St. Rochus Church was built in the oak grove in 1968 and has a distinctive tent-shaped roof.

Traces of earlier history include the historic livestock watering trough beside the former Trier–Koblenz Roman road and the sunken lane known as Holg. Holg recalls the route of the road through Hasborn. Together with the churches, these sites offer another perspective on Hasborn: the town’s character is shaped not only by its landscape, but also by its architectural history and former routes.

More to explore in the Bernkastel-Wittlich travel destination

The wider travel destination of Bernkastel-Wittlich brings together the volcanic Eifel, the romantic Moselle Valley and the Hunsrück, with its abundance of forests and meadows. The landscape around the 816-metre-high Erbeskopf is ideal for hiking; the mountain also offers a wide range of winter sports. In Manderscheid, two medieval castle ruins face one another on steep hill spurs above the Lieser. For hikers, the Manderscheider Burgenstieg offers a moderately difficult, 5.4-kilometre circular route around the castles, with a stated duration of two hours. The Burgenklettersteig offers a different kind of experience: it has three stages, is around four kilometres long in total, and includes one kilometre secured with cables. Bernkastel-Wittlich therefore offers two distinct ways to explore: a classic circular hike and a via ferrata.
