Kinheim lies in the large Moselle Loop between Traben-Trarbach and Bernkastel and stretches along steep vineyard slopes beside the river. Roman finds, historic farmsteads and St. Martin’s Church tell of different chapters in the town’s history. Hiking trails and a cycling route downstream offer further perspectives on the wine-growing landscape.

The History of Viticulture and Roman Finds

Kinheim is first mentioned in a document from 1148, which confirms the Echternach Abbey’s ownership of vineyards there. Before secularization, the Benedictine Abbey of Echternach used the Echternacher Hof to manage its vineyards in Kinheim. The complex includes a building dating from 1774. The keystone at the gate of the press house bears the coat of arms of Abbot Michael Hormann.

Roman history can also be traced through specific finds. Excavations in Kinheim-Kindel uncovered the remains of a Roman villa in 1976. It had a central hall with hypocaust heating and a bath complex with eight rooms. Part of the heating room has been uncovered for visitors, offering an impression of the complex. As conservation measures and access arrangements may change, check the latest information about the visible remains before your visit. The same excavations also yielded a sculpture of Sucellus, a Gallo-Roman protective deity. A relief of Sucellus is considered an important monument because it provides evidence of viticulture here as far back as Roman times.

Church, Castle House and Chapels

Construction of St. Martin’s Church began in 1826, and it was consecrated in 1827. Its Neoclassical hall design, domed tower, slate-rubble walls and sandstone details define its architecture. Three stained-glass windows from 1943 refer to viticulture. The theme that shapes Kinheim’s landscape is thus reflected in the details of the church interior as well.

The Castle House was the ancestral home of the knightly family of Kinheim. The complex comprises an upper castle, a lower castle and a gate tower. The origins of the Chapel of St. Mary, known as Kinheimer Bildchen, date back to 1730; it was expanded into a chapel around 1762–1763. Other historic landmarks along the way include a wayside shrine erected in 1654 and the neighboring Baroque wayside cross from 1748.

Wine Country on Foot and by Bike

Kinheim-Höhe lies above the steep vineyards and offers views across the Moselle. Rosenberg and Hubertuslay are named vineyard sites in Kinheim; the town’s sights also include half-timbered houses and old wine estates. Alongside its architectural heritage, the wine-growing landscape and townscape are therefore central to exploring the area.

The Kinheim Panorama Circular Trail passes through the Rosenberg vineyard site, follows the Moselsteig toward Ürzig and, on the return, goes past a reconstructed Roman wine press. Kinheim has several marked hiking trails with a combined length of about 25 kilometers. Trail markers and conditions may change. If you prefer to travel by bike, the Moselle Cycle Route runs downstream from Kinheim via Kröv to Traben-Trarbach; conditions and signage on this route may also change.

Visitors can make use of bus services on routes 360 and 350, a Moselle boat timetable and information about local walking tours. The Panorama Circular Trail is accessible by bus; a seasonal return by bus or boat is possible from Ürzig. Check the timetable and seasonal return options when planning your trip.

When choosing accommodation, consider whether local history, wine country, hiking or cycling will shape your trip. These priorities raise different planning questions: for the Panorama Circular Trail, a seasonal return from Ürzig is a consideration, while route details and signage matter for the Moselle cycling route.
