Starkenburg: Castle Traces and Moselle Views
Accommodation in Starkenburg
Starkenburg lies more than 250 metres above the Moselle, with views from here stretching across the Moselle Valley. The remains of the castle and historic architectural features give the village a distinctive character. At the same time, various routes lead through the landscape. You can shape your trip around local history, hiking and mountain biking.
Cultural history with tangible traces
The village’s character includes old half-timbered houses and slate buildings, as well as historic stonework in the old town centre. Other features include the Baroque church dating from 1764 and vaulted cellars believed to date from the Middle Ages. Remains of Starkenburg Castle have also survived. The different forms and materials make the village interesting to anyone curious about architectural history and historic townscapes.
A story associated with the castle tells how Countess Loretta held Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg there after a boat trip on the river. In Starkenburg, you can follow in Loretta’s footsteps. Another way to explore the castle is the ARGO app: on site, it shows the castle at its original size in a 360-degree augmented-reality view. Check the app’s availability before your trip.
Hiking trails with different highlights
Stage 13 of the Moselsteig Trail leads from Traben-Trarbach through Starkenburg and Enkirch to Reil. As the route may change, check the current route before setting off.
The Leiermannspfad can start and end at the community centre on Burenstraße. Along the way, it passes old, fully operational bakehouses in Starkenburg. The Leiermann route also offers the chance to experience the Ahringsbach Valley and the heights above the Moselle. Check the trail markers on site.
Another option is the Zollturm-Steige, a network of three interconnected hiking trails, with Starkenburg as one of its starting points. The trails are challenging, with many metres of elevation gain and a high proportion of the route on trails. Check the current route before your hike; maintenance or diversions may change route details. Weather and trail conditions can also affect the level of difficulty.
Mills, bakehouses and cycling miles
A hike from Starkenburg into the Ahringsbach Valley may offer the chance to see a water-powered grain mill in operation. Check in advance whether it will be running when you visit. On Mill Day, you can enjoy freshly baked bread from the village bakehouse; plan your visit around the event dates.
Mountain biking also has a clearly defined character here: around Starkenburg, the routes include steep climbs and fast descents. This differs from the Zollturm-Steige, where substantial elevation gain and the high proportion of the route on trails are defining features. Check local route conditions before setting off.
