Schwollen is set in the Hunsrück uplands and combines forest trails with Roman traces and village traditions. When planning your trip, you can focus on outdoor activities, local history or local festivals—and bring these interests together at your own pace.

Forest trails for short and long walks

Around 200 hectares of forest are within the municipality. The well-signposted hiking trails are suitable for short walks as well as longer hikes. This range gives you a practical guide for planning your day: you can decide in advance whether a short walk or a longer hike better suits your plans.

The signposted trails are also suitable for jogging, hiking and cycling. If conditions change, it is best to check the route and signs on site.

Art and history along the way

The 2.5-kilometre Götterallee/Sirona Trail runs between Leisel and Schwollen. Ten colourful, life-size sculptures of Roman deities are displayed along the route. This makes the trail a way to combine exercise with a cultural discovery. It also passes Heiligenbösch Church: the former pilgrimage church is now a parish church and stands on the ruins of an extensive ancient villa complex.

Another Roman landmark is the Siesbach Roman tomb, which is dated to around 175 AD. It can be reached on foot from Schwollen via Kirschweiler Straße. Conditions on the Götterallee and the footpath to the Roman tomb may change; take this into account when planning your trip.

Village life and food

The Fountain Festival brings together the local fountain businesses and the Sauerbrunnen spring. The multi-day festival takes place in the village square and community hall; women from Schwollen bake homemade cakes for the occasion. Dates, programme and venues may change, so check the latest information before planning a visit.

The Christmas market is also part of local tradition. Wooden stalls and Christmas goods are a feature of its offerings, which may vary depending on the date. For everyday needs, Schwollen has a bakery that also sells groceries. The Landgasthaus Böß is another local option for a meal. As shops and businesses can change, it is advisable to check current offerings if you have specific shopping or dining plans.

In the wider destination of Birkenfeld

Part of the HunsrĂĽck-Hochwald National Park lies within the Birkenfeld collective municipality. The Birkenfeld State Museum has permanent exhibitions on the Celts and Romans; Birkenfeld and the Wittelsbachs; the iron industry in Birkenfeld district; an old classroom from around 1930; and the Oldenburg era. These exhibitions offer different perspectives on nature and regional history.

The one-kilometre Obere Nahe Water Experience Trail in Hoppstädten-Weiersbach has four starting points. It introduces the diversity of aquatic life in the Upper Nahe, including barbel and gudgeon, as well as water birds such as the kingfisher and dipper. Dragonfly species such as the common damselfly and river dragonfly are also among the topics.

The 1.6-kilometre National Park Island Trail around Börfink and Thranenweier offers a different focus on nature. Information boards cover the rare and threatened arnica meadows, how they formed and how they are protected, as well as their biodiversity. The water trail and the island trail therefore differ mainly in their themes: aquatic life on one route and arnica meadows on the other.
