Discover Blankenrath: Church History and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Blankenrath
Blankenrath combines striking reminders of local history with trails through forests and meadows. In the village center, half-timbered buildings and villas from several centuries stand side by side; at the Flaumbachtal pond, benches offer a quiet place to relax and watch the surroundings. There are also hikes of various lengths. This lets you choose different focuses for your stay—from architecture and religious themes to a longer circular route.
Church History with Striking Details
The nave of the Church of the Assumption of Mary was built in 1761/1762. The Romanesque church tower is considered the oldest surviving witness to Blankenrath’s history. It is 33 meters high and has an octagonal pyramidal roof, topped by a gilded rooster. During renovations in 1975, the altar area was redesigned; the Tree of Life motif defines this design.
Another religious destination is the Lourdes grotto, built in 1974. It serves as a place of prayer and is also visited by people from the surrounding area. The path to the grotto has 14 Stations of the Cross, with bronze plaques mounted on basalt columns. The combination of the grotto, path, and individual stations gives the site a different character from the architecture of the parish church.
Village Scenery and a Break by the Water
Half-timbered houses and villas shape the village center. The buildings date from the 18th to the early 20th century, representing different historical phases of construction. The Flaumbachtal pond lies on the eastern edge of the village, nestled in the surrounding landscape. Benches around the pond invite you to relax and watch the ducks and fish. This makes a peaceful stay by the water an alternative to the longer hiking routes.
Hikes of Various Lengths
The Kirchspiel hiking trail opened in 2010. This circular route, around 20 kilometers long, leads from the parish church to chapels in neighboring villages and connects Blankenrath with Reidenhausen, Haserich, Panzweiler, Walhausen, Schauren, and Hesweiler. There are also twelve shorter sections, between 2 and 20 kilometers long. This range makes it easy to compare your options: you can choose a section or use the longer loop as a guide when planning your day.
Short, easy hikes lead from Blankenrath toward the HanosiusmĂĽhle chapel or the Flaumbachtal pond and are usually 4 to 7 kilometers long. Two stages of the Saar-HunsrĂĽck Trail connect directly to Blankenrath. Forest and meadow paths in and around the village also offer hikes of varying difficulty, from relaxed to physically demanding. This means short walks, a circular route, and onward stages are all available as different hiking options.
When looking for accommodation, you can first consider what kind of daily routine suits your trip: Would you mainly like to explore local history and architecture, choose shorter walks, or plan longer hikes? The options described provide a clear guide, without requiring you to focus on just one theme.
Cochem-Zell in a Broader Context
The wider destination of Cochem-Zell offers additional cultural and nature-related attractions. The medieval Imperial Castle of Cochem was restored and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style by Louis Ravené in the 19th century, during the Romantic era of castle restoration. Rooms open to visitors include, among others, the Knights’ Hall, dining room, hunting room, and bower. The Jungferweiher is an important breeding and resting area for numerous bird species, particularly during spring and autumn migration.
An independent excursion destination in the wider region of Cochem-Zell is the Geierlay suspension bridge. It is 360 meters long and stands 100 meters above the Mörsdorfer Bachtal, between Sosberg in the Cochem-Zell district and Mörsdorf in the Rhein-Hunsrück district. These standalone destinations complement Blankenrath’s local history and hiking options with other themes, without implying that they are features of the village itself.
