Landkern offers plenty of forests and hiking opportunities, as well as local architectural history reflected in St. Servatius Parish Church and numerous farmsteads. Those looking to combine nature and culture will find plenty to explore here: paths through forests and valleys, views across the Moselle Valley and historic details in the townscape.

Forests, the Moselle Valley and views

Landkern is surrounded by numerous forests. From here, views extend across the Moselle Valley towards the HunsrĂĽck. One specific viewpoint is the Zickelslei on the edge of the Endert Valley: a hiking route from Landkern leads to the rocky viewpoint. In clear weather, the view from there takes in the ruins of Winneburg Castle and Cochem Imperial Castle. If you like having a named destination on the horizon when you hike, this is a special landmark to look out for.

Landkern’s hiking opportunities take you through forests, into the Moselle Valley and through side valleys with fast-flowing mountain streams. You can plan your day around the kind of landscape that interests you most: forest, valley or waterways. The routes and viewpoints offer different highlights, without limiting your visit to just one destination.

Hiking to rocky viewpoints and mills

Another route follows the Browelsbach through the Endert Valley. It passes the Browels and Büchel mills before reaching the Göbelsmühle mill. Once you reach Göbelsmühle, there is an opportunity to stop for refreshments. As visitor facilities may change, check that this option is available before setting off. When choosing between the two hikes described, their main attractions offer a useful comparison: at Zickelslei, the rocky viewpoint is the highlight; on the route to Göbelsmühle, it is the stream and the mills.

St. Servatius and the townscape

The Catholic parish church of St. Servatius was consecrated on 22 July 1862. Cologne architect Vinzenz Statz designed it in the Neo-Gothic style. The organ, which is still there today, was also installed in 1862. A chapel in Landkern was first mentioned as early as 1511; even then, its patron saint was St. Servatius. This means the local history of the church’s patron saint goes back further than the consecration of today’s parish church.

Numerous farmsteads also preserve Landkern’s agricultural past in its townscape. Together with the church, they offer two distinct historical points of interest: sacred architecture and traces of the area’s agricultural character. Those interested in local history can explore these aspects side by side while discovering Landkern; they do not imply a specific order for your visit.

Planning a stay in Landkern

Landkern has accommodation providers, a hotel, an inn and a campsite offering overnight stays and refreshments. The type of accommodation is a practical starting point for your search: you can look specifically for a hotel, inn, campsite or another accommodation provider. Check current availability before booking, as local visitor facilities may change over time.

You can reach Landkern by train via Cochem station, about 7 km away on the Koblenz–Trier–Luxembourg line. For travel by car, the A48 is about 5 km away; the Koblenz interchange provides a connection to the A61. This lets you compare rail and road travel options based on your own plans. If you travel by train, include the current timetable in your planning.

Another cultural highlight in Cochem-Zell

In the wider Cochem-Zell destination, Cochem Imperial Castle offers its own cultural and historical highlight. In the 19th century, during the castle revival movement, Louis Ravené restored and rebuilt it in the Neo-Gothic style. The rooms open to visitors include the Knights’ Hall, dining hall, hunting room and bower. Alongside Landkern’s local architectural history, Cochem-Zell thus also offers the history and visitor-accessible rooms of a castle as a distinct subject to explore.
