Peterswald-Löffelscheid is located in the Hunsrück, about 8 km southeast of Zell (Mosel). Nearby forests, meadows and stream valleys provide a setting for walks and hikes around the village. In addition, each of the two districts has its own church. Nature and architectural history thus offer contrasting highlights for your stay.

Altlayer Schweiz: Slate, Rocks and Views

Altlayer Schweiz is characterised by jagged slate rocks, rocky sections, woodland paths, stream valleys and far-reaching views. The trail is certified with 90 experience points. The Stahlkreuz viewpoint along the trail offers a view across to Peterswald-Löffelscheid on the heights of the Hunsrück. The trail includes a via ferrata in rocky terrain secured with a steel cable; conditions on the terrain may vary.

Traumschleifen trails in general may include steep and difficult sections; paths can be slippery in the rain or in winter. Sure-footedness and good physical fitness are required.

Churches and a Pilgrimage Site

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul stands in the centre of Peterswald and was built in 1765/66. In Löffelscheid, the Church of the Visitation of Mary was consecrated in 1964. It is a striking circular building made up of two interlocking cones; its freestanding tower is 28 metres high. The churches, built in 1765/66 and 1964, date from very different periods. The Marienkapelle in Peterswald is known locally as “Bildchen” and serves as a pilgrimage destination.

The dog exercise area also offers a specific meeting place. Dogs can move around freely, play and interact with one another there. Play and training equipment gives them the opportunity to test their agility. At the same time, the area is a place where dog owners can meet and spend time together.

Cochem-Zell: Culture and Orientation

In the Cochem-Zell travel region, the medieval Imperial Castle of Cochem offers a distinctive historical highlight. It was restored and rebuilt in the neo-Gothic style by Louis Ravené in the 19th century as part of the castle revival movement. Rooms open to visitors include the Knights’ Hall, dining room, hunting room and ladies’ chamber. In the wider Cochem-Zell travel region, Jungferweiher is also an important breeding and resting area for numerous bird species, particularly during spring and autumn migration.

Many tourist attractions in Cochem-Zell are well connected to the public transport network. The visitor programme published in July 2025 lists a suitable bus or train line for each destination. As specific routes may change, check the current connection before travelling.
