In Bollendorf, striking sandstone formations meet traces of Roman times and later periods. The Grüne Hölle Tour follows narrow paths through Bollendorf’s rocky forest and past bizarre rock formations. There is also a fairytale walk through the rocky forest, a Roman villa and buildings shaped by different periods of history. This lets you bring nature and culture together as you plan your trip.

Rocky Forest and a Variety of Tours

The Grüne Hölle Tour combines narrow woodland paths with the bizarre shapes of the sandstone. If you are interested in this landscape, Bollendorf also has the Fairytale Trail: the Bollendorf Fairytale Trail is a fairytale walk through the rocky forest. The two experiences offer different highlights—one focuses on the rocky landscape, while the other brings out the fairytale character of the walk. Trail details for the Fairytale Trail may be updated by the operator; check the current route before setting off.

Audio tours also explore the area. The Bollendorf Audio Tour app offers the tours “Grüne Hölle” and “Manfred’s Rock Tour.” If you would like to include an audio-guided tour in your plans, check that the app is available before your trip.

Roman Traces and Architectural History

The Roman Villa Bollendorf, also known as a “villa rustica,” was inhabited from the 2nd century until the end of the 4th century. Remains of the underfloor heating system, the hypocaust, can still be seen at the site. On the entrance side facing the valley, a colonnade stood between two corner towers. A bathhouse was later added to the west, with a caldarium for hot baths, a tepidarium for warm baths and a frigidarium for cold baths. These terms refer to the different bathing rooms and help explain the site beyond the traces that have survived. In 1997, the Eifel Club Bollendorf built a modern protective structure over the villa.

Bollendorf Castle reflects a different period. It acquired its present appearance during the Baroque era, when Abbot Gregorius Schouppe had it extensively remodeled in the 18th century. The curtain wall and remains of the tower survive from the medieval predecessor. The castle is thought to have been built on Roman remains. The uncertainty in this account is part of its architectural history: a connection to Roman remains is a possible interpretation, not a confirmed fact.

St. Michael’s Parish Church is also part of Bollendorf’s architectural history. It was built in 1838/39 to plans by Johann Georg Wolff, then Trier’s municipal master builder. This Neoclassical hall church has an altar with columns and an attached tower. Alongside its Roman traces and castle, Bollendorf thus offers another example of different architectural forms to explore.
