Orenhofen: Hiking Trails and Local History
Accommodation in Orenhofen
When exploring Orenhofen, you’ll encounter two special themes: paths through the forest and surrounding area, and a varied local history reflected in the church, archaeological finds and older buildings. Depending on your interests, you can focus your stay more on outdoor activities, cultural history or both.
Hiking trails through the forest and surrounding area
Orenhofen has signposted hiking trails. The surrounding forests and neighboring villages can also be reached from Orenhofen on foot or by bicycle. Well-maintained hiking and country lanes run through the area, offering an option to include either a hike or a bike tour in your plans.
The Orenhofen O2 hiking trail is a circular route through Orenhofen Forest and runs mostly along well-maintained paths. GPS navigation or a hiking map is also recommended for guidance. Trail conditions may change; check them before setting out and plan to use additional navigation on the O2.
When choosing a route, it helps to distinguish between the named circular trail and the paths into the surrounding area: the O2 runs through Orenhofen Forest, while hiking and country lanes also provide access to nearby forests and neighboring villages on foot or by bike. This lets you choose between a circular forest hike and routes that can also be used for a bike tour when planning your day.
St. Rochus Church and the Rochus Festival
St. Rochus Church is a Neo-Gothic hall church built of red sandstone ashlar and constructed in 1876/77. Its features include wall paintings and retaining walls with a staircase. The Klais organ was built in 1907 and has been preserved in its original condition. The furnishings also include an 18th-century statue of St. Roch, depicting the saint with a staff and a dog. The construction period, sandstone and preserved furnishings combine to create a multifaceted impression of the town’s history.
An annual religious celebration is held for the Rochus Festival on August 16; the Rochus fair follows on the next Sunday. If you’d like to plan your trip around these dates, check the current event dates in advance, as the annual schedule may change.
Archaeological finds and historic buildings
Finds from the Stone Age and from Roman and Frankish times reach far back into the past. Pottery shards attest to Roman pottery workshops in Orenhofen. A pipe factory produced clay pipes until the first half of the 20th century. Another attraction is an excavation of a Frankish burial ground. Together, these traces offer a glimpse into several distinct periods.
The former girls’ school is also a historic building: it is one of Orenhofen’s protected buildings and is a yellow and red sandstone ashlar structure dating from 1876/77. A war memorial from 1968/69 stands in the cemetery. The different construction dates and memorial sites complement the archaeological traces with evidence from more recent history.
A wayside chapel stands at the intersection of Kapellenstraße and Zemmerer Straße and probably dates from the 18th or early 19th century. The niche cross may even date back to the 16th century. Both dates are uncertain: the chapel is thought to belong to the period mentioned, while the age of the cross is only a possible estimate.
When looking for accommodation in Orenhofen, your interests can guide your travel plans: would you prefer to focus on hikes and paths into the surrounding area, or would you rather explore the town’s buildings and history? The signposted trails, the O2 and the local history offer different starting points for planning your stay.
