Wißmannsdorf lies northwest of Bitburg on the middle reaches of the Prüm. Hiking trails and local history come together in the green, hilly Eifel landscape: a short loop leads around the village, while the Südeifel Nature Park Circular Route No. 22 offers a considerably longer tour. Churches, chapels and old wayside crosses tell of other facets of Wißmannsdorf. The Prüm itself also shapes the landscape: it is a tributary of the Sauer and flows into the nearby Bitburg Reservoir.

Hiking with different highlights

The Südeifel Nature Park Circular Route No. 22 starts and ends at Place Montaigu on Wißmannsdorf’s main street. At 16.7 kilometers, it is a moderate hike—a longer option for anyone planning to cover more ground. The route passes through the Echtersbach Valley and Hammer Büsch, a hillside forest. Along the way, there are panoramic views of Hamm Castle. Near Biersdorf am See, the circular route runs parallel to the Bitburger Brewery Nordic Walking Route for several kilometers.

The Kleine Prümschleife, by contrast, is a short circular route around Wißmannsdorf. Part of it follows the Prüm, passes a small local woodland and offers views across the Bitburger Gutland. This gives you a choice of two differently designed routes: a short loop and a moderate 16.7-kilometer hike. Wißmannsdorf also has idyllic cycling routes. Check the route information before setting out.

Churches, crosses and Hamm Castle

Local history includes the Catholic parish church of St. Martin and St. Rosa, as well as chapels in the districts of Hermesdorf and Koosbüsch. Wayside crosses from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries add further historic landmarks. The Lasch Cross dates from 1579 and is considered the most intricately crafted wayside cross in the Trier region. Sandstone craftsmanship is also part of the village’s history: this tradition continued in Wißmannsdorf for more than 400 years and ended in the mid-1950s.

Hamm Castle offers another link to the past. This late-medieval fortification dates from the 14th century. Visits are possible on request; arrange a tour before your trip. When planning, you can decide whether to include the castle as a destination or enjoy views of it from the nature park route.
