Discover Schopp: Forest Trails and Cycling
Accommodation in Schopp
Schopp combines extensive woodland with trails for hikers and cyclists. The municipality owns around 800 hectares of woodland; more than 50 kilometres of marked hiking trails add to the picture. There is also access to the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park and a long cycling tradition. This raises a practical question when choosing a holiday destination: should your stay focus mainly on hiking routes, cycling trails, or local history as well?
Forest Trails and Hiking Stages
The trails around Schopp are part of the Holzland hiking trails of the Palatinate Forest Association and the West Palatinate hiking trails, a regional network of routes. The Schopp Forest also has a well-developed network of trails for hiking and horse riding. This means you can explore everything from the local forest trail network to named hiking networks; when planning your day, you can treat hiking and horse riding as separate activities.
The Palatinate Forest Trail offers a specific choice of stage: the first stage starts at Schopp railway station and leads to Johanniskreuz; it is 15.3 kilometres long. Near Schopp, this stage follows the Moosalbe through the Karlstal Gorge. After a small forest pond, the route reaches the “Moosalbsprung” spring, which invites you to stop for a while. The distance helps you consider the stage as a hiking option in its own right, while the spring provides a specific reason to take a break.
Mountain Biking and Cycling Tradition
For mountain biking enthusiasts, Schopp is a gateway to the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park. Tour 3 of the park starts at Schopp railway station. Since the first stage of the Palatinate Forest Trail also starts there, the station is a shared point of reference for two different types of tour. If you are choosing between hiking and mountain biking, you have a stage route to Johanniskreuz and a park tour as specific options.
The town’s cycling history has other established points of reference. The Whitsun race has been held for more than 50 years at the Eichwaldstadion cycling track in Schopp. Schopp has also hosted the German Cross-Country Championships three times. The Whitsun race represents a long-standing tradition, while the championships mark three occasions when the town hosted the event.
The Old Waterworks
Another aspect of the town is Schopp’s old waterworks: it has been carefully renovated, and its old water pump is still functional. This brings a piece of engineering heritage into focus alongside hiking trails and cycling. The pump is a specific detail of the town’s history and broadens the range of themes to include Schopp’s built heritage.
