Discover Ulmet: Gorges, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Ulmet
Ulmet has long been recognised as a tourism destination. Its character is shaped by a challenging circular trail through gorges, landscapes along the middle Glan and cultural sites spanning different periods. This gives you a choice when planning your trip: active hours outdoors or explorations of local history, art and festival traditions.
Hiking between gorges and views of the Glan
The 7 Schluchtenpfad (Seven Gorges Trail) is a challenging circular route of about eight kilometres that passes seven gorges. It also includes around 310 metres of elevation gain. As the route runs mostly along natural paths, suitable footwear and a reasonable level of fitness are essential preparations. Before setting out, check the local information about the route and conditions. You should also check the current signs for the starting point in the village centre, by the “Dorfbrigg”.
From the highest point, the view extends across the middle Glan valley and its mountains. On the 7 Schluchtenpfad, the Kimmelingschlucht forms the municipal boundary between Erdesbach and Ulmet; a small waterfall is part of its landscape. In spring, the Bärlauchschlucht is considered unique in the region.
The Wartekopf nature reserve in Ulmet covers 122 hectares and includes heat-loving oak dry forests, rocks and dry grasslands, as well as beech forests, natural streams and species-rich nutrient-poor meadows. This variety of habitats gives the destination’s natural attractions a different character from the circular trail’s striking gorges.
Chapel, art and festivals
The Flurskapelle St. Florus is considered one of the oldest churches in the middle Glan valley. Its Romanesque chancel tower and Baroque nave bring together different architectural styles; other highlights include a historic Stumm organ and the nearby Kappeler Bridge, dating from the 18th century. The August Drumm Museum Room displays previously unpublished sculptures and reliefs by sculptor Prof. August Drumm, complemented by pictures and information about his work. Further works can be found at the Flurskapelle and in the marketplace.
Festivals also add a cultural touch to Ulmet: the Gallusmarkt and Hammelfest are well known both locally and beyond the region. If you would like to time your trip to coincide with one of the festivals, check the event dates in advance.
Different ways to explore, including a donkey excursion
The guided Ulmet–Esels-Tour (Ulmet Donkey Tour) offers a different experience: children ride Erdesbach donkeys while adults walk along the Glan and over the Brückenberg and Wartekopf. The tour returns to Ulmet. If you are planning to join this guided tour, confirm the details available for booking before your trip.
The Ulmet–Kusel hiking route also offers the opportunity to visit the Erdesbach goat cheese dairy in Erdesbach. Confirm arrangements for visitors before planning a detour there.
A further look at the wider Kusel destination
In the wider Kusel destination, the Veldenz hiking trail offers a different scale from Ulmet’s circular route of about eight kilometres: it is around 60 kilometres long, holds the “Leading Quality Trail – Best of Europe” award and can be divided into five stages. It starts at Lichtenberg Castle above Thallichtenberg and ends in Lauterecken. Check the latest route and award information before planning your stages. Lichtenberg Castle is 425 metres long, ranks among the longest castle ruins in Germany and is the largest castle complex in the Palatinate. Inside are the Palatinate Musicians’ Museum and the Geoskop.
Tailor your stay to suit you
When choosing accommodation in Ulmet, it helps to first decide what you want to focus on: challenging hikes, exploring natural landscapes or making time for the chapel, art and festival traditions. A guided tour or a possible detour to the cheese dairy requires separate arrangements. If you would like to broaden your stay, you can also consider Ulmet’s attractions separately from the other destinations in the wider Kusel destination.
