Kattenes: Church Art, Wine Traditions and Trails
Accommodation in Kattenes
Kattenes reveals its distinctive character through two different historical periods: the neo-Gothic St. Anna’s Church, with an extraordinary altar, and a wine-making tradition that also includes a historic product. There are also opportunities for hiking and a section of the Mosel Cycle Route. When choosing accommodation, it helps to consider in advance whether you would like to focus your stay more on culture, wine and local history or on activities on foot and by bike.
St. Anna’s Church and an Altar Carved from a Single Stone
The branch church of St. Anna was built in Kattenes between 1899 and 1901 in the neo-Gothic style. The church houses one of the last three altars in Europe carved from a single stone. It dates from 1667. This brings together architectural history from around 1900 and a much older work—a special point of interest for anyone interested in architecture and sacred art.
The entrance hall of St. Anna’s Church is open, offering a view into the church interior and of the St. Anna altar. You can view the altar from there.
Winegrowing and Local History
Kattenes is considered a traditional wine-growing village, with numerous full-time winegrowers. The Kattenes wine festival has been a tradition since 1966. In the 1950s and 1960s, the herbal liqueur “Moselfeuer” was also produced in Kattenes, bringing the village recognition beyond the region. Anyone interested in the history of regional food and drink will therefore find both a connection to the wine-growing village and a product history that is clearly set in its historical context.

Hikes and Scenery in the Wider Löf Travel Destination
In the wider Löf travel destination, the Traumpfädchen Löfer Rabenlaypfad is a moderately difficult 4.72-kilometre circular trail; the start and finish are at the sports field in Löf. The Würzlaysteig has a different character: this linear themed trail on the Mosel Erlebnis Route follows narrow paths above the steepest vineyard slopes from Lehmen to Löf. Here, you can compare a circular trail that starts and finishes at the same point with a route between two villages.
Moselsteig stages 21 and 22 are also located in the wider Löf travel destination. Stage 21 ends in Niederbachstraße, near the church or the Moselle bridge; on the way to Löf, it descends through dense boxwood and the Kehrbachtal valley. Stage 22 starts in Löf and leads via Alken to Kobern-Gondorf.
The Kanaul near Löf adds a landscape and history theme to this hiking perspective. The 242-metre-high ridge is a viewpoint overlooking the Moselle and surrounding villages, as well as a popular hiking destination. From its southern side, you can descend into the Nachtigallental valley; boxwood bushes grow along the trail. The northernmost boundary of the boxwood’s range is on the Lower Moselle. Several depressions in the ground dating from the final phase of the Second World War are also visible on the Kanaul. They are more than one metre deep and can be several metres in diameter.
Löf is accessible for the Bridge Tour by regional express or regional train; bicycles can be taken along. Check current timetables before travelling. The trails and landscapes described in the wider Löf travel destination offer an additional regional connection.
