Discover Kirchwald: Panoramas and nature
Accommodation in Kirchwald
Kirchwald combines far-reaching views with quiet natural spots that can be explored in different ways. The panoramic trail opens up views across the Eifel landscape; in the Kirchwalder Auen, streams, woodland and ponds create a different setting. Viewpoints and small cultural landmarks add to the nature experiences. When planning your trip, it is worth deciding in advance whether you would like to spend your time on the circular trail, the nature trail or individual discoveries.
Far-reaching views along the panoramic trail
The panoramic trail starts and ends at Kirchwald village square. There are open views across the Eifel landscape for almost the entire route. On a clear day, the panorama stretches as far as the HunsrĂĽck, Westerwald and Taunus; another viewpoint looks across the Nitztal valley to the Hohe Acht. On the Mohrsberg, dense juniper growth, partly overgrown with shrubs, marks the upper southern slope. Wide horizons and a distinctive stand of juniper create contrasting impressions of the landscape.
A particular highlight along the panoramic trail is the “Nitzblick” viewpoint. You can reach it via “Zum Nitzblick” road, along a paved path past the barbecue hut, and then along a woodland path of about 100 metres. Directional arrows, distance markers and location signs mark the panoramic trail. At the foot of the Mohrsberg, a small wayside shrine stands beside the path. It is dedicated to Saint Roch and the Virgin Mary and offers a welcome opportunity to take a break.
Streams, woodland and ponds in the Kirchwalder Auen
The “Kirchwalder Auen” nature trail is a footpath of around 1.3 kilometres that follows a stream through woodland and a pond landscape and crosses three bridges. The protected area includes a wetland with three ponds arranged in a row. Its diverse wildlife includes a rich variety of insects and numerous birds. If you are travelling with children, you can look out for the trail’s different features together: the stream, bridges, ponds and the habitats described along the way offer tangible points of interest in the surroundings.
Free guided tours of the nature trail are available for groups of five or more; donations are welcome. If you are planning a guided tour, confirm the arrangements before your trip.
Kirchwald’s culture and practical information
The present-day parish church of St Dionysius was built in 1906/1907 and consecrated in 1908. There is a car park for the panoramic trail at the village square next to the church. As parking arrangements on site may change, it is advisable to check shortly before setting off. At the foot of the Mohrsberg, the wayside shrine combines a place to rest with a small religious cultural landmark beside the path.
Cyclists will also find a “Stopp-o-Mat” in Kirchwald, a measuring station for cyclists. If you want to include it in a scheduled cycling session, check in advance that it is currently operating. Various events and festivals take place in Kirchwald throughout the year; check the relevant dates for your trip.
Culture in the wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz
Other cultural sites in the wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz offer their own highlights, but are not local features of Kirchwald. In Mayen, Genovevaburg Castle was built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier. Sayner HĂĽtte is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. These examples represent historical and industrial culture in the wider destination.
Choose the right accommodation for your trip
When looking for accommodation in Kirchwald, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your trip: would you mainly like to explore the views and trails in the area, focus on the natural surroundings of the Kirchwalder Auen, or also include cultural sites in the wider destination of Mayen-Koblenz? Your choice will shape the experiences that guide your plans.
