Lasserg: Castle, Views and Trails
Accommodation in Lasserg
Discover Lasserg between history and open countryside: Bischofstein Castle gives the village a striking historical landmark, while Küppchen offers views of the castle and the Moselle Valley. There is also a chapel in the village centre, as well as opportunities to explore on foot or by bike.
Bischofstein Castle and the chapel in the village centre
Bischofstein Castle in Münstermaifeld-Lasserg was built in the second half of the 12th century. After being destroyed in the late 17th century, it was rebuilt between 1930 and 1933. These different dates give the castle’s history a broad historical context: it dates back to the Middle Ages, while its reconstruction took place centuries later.
Visits are possible by prior appointment. If you want to make the castle a key part of your day, arrange your visit in advance. The chapel in the centre of Lasserg, dedicated to Saint Benedict, is also worth a visit. Its dedication makes it a distinctive cultural and historical landmark in the village.
Views and trails for walking or cycling
From the so-called “Küppchen,” you can enjoy views of Bischofstein Castle and the Moselle Valley. The viewpoint is also a destination on Route 2, which runs through Lasserg and is about 35 kilometres long. This makes it possible to include the viewpoint in a longer bike ride rather than treating it as the sole plan for the day.
If you prefer to explore on foot, you can hike from Lasserg to Bischofstein Castle via the Traumpfad Laysteig trail. A path descending into the valley holds some surprises for attentive hikers. The cycling route and hiking trail offer different experiences: Route 2 leads to the Lasserger Küppchen, while the Laysteig takes you to the castle. You can plan your outing according to whether you want to cycle to the viewpoint or hike to the castle.
Culture and exploring the town in the wider Münstermaifeld destination
The wider Münstermaifeld destination also has its own cultural and historical attractions. The Collegiate Church of St. Martin and St. Severus in Münstermaifeld is the church of the former collegiate foundation of St. Martin and St. Severus. For an overview of the main sights, a historical town tour takes you through Münstermaifeld on a walk lasting just under an hour. A smartphone-based town tour offers another way to explore 31 sights. The two formats have different focuses: a walk lasting just under an hour, or a tour covering numerous individual stops.
The Maifeld Archaeological Museum is located in Münstermaifeld, in the vaulted cellar beneath the Tourist Information Centre, in the old provost’s residence on Münsterplatz. It features the permanent exhibition “Wealth. Power. Salvation.” The Münstermaifeld Local History and Experience Museum also includes other museum rooms in the town, among them a historic forge.
For cycling, the wider Münstermaifeld destination offers a different kind of route: the Maifeld Cycle and Hiking Trail follows a disused railway line, which is almost flat, between Münstermaifeld, Polch, Ochtendung and Mayen. It is also a sculpture trail, with artworks forming an open-air museum in the landscape. Another route description starts at the former Münstermaifeld railway station and initially follows the main cycle and hiking trail; after about 500 metres, the route branches off towards Eltz Castle.
When looking for accommodation, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: will it mainly include the castle, viewpoints and trails in Lasserg, or would you also like to plan town tours and museums in the wider Münstermaifeld destination? This will help you choose the right mix of outdoor experiences, history and town exploration for your trip.
