Neustadt an der Weinstraße: History and Palatinate Delights
Accommodation in Neustadt an der Weinstraße
Neustadt an der Weinstraße combines a distinctive history with excursions by historic railway and bus, as well as trails lined with sweet chestnut trees. Hambach Castle, the Collegiate Church and the Palatinate’s wine-making tradition each add their own character.
History to Experience and a Distinctive Cityscape
At Hambach Castle, two exhibitions offer different ways to explore history. “Farbe bekennen!” (Taking a Stand!) invites visitors to take part, vote and comment at interactive stations. Topics include freedom of opinion, freedom of the press, black, red and gold, and Europe. Families interested in these topics can also join in at the stations. The exhibition “Hinauf, hinauf zum Schloss!” (Up, up to the Castle!) explains why the castle is regarded as the cradle of German democracy. Using exhibits and interactive stations, it explores the events surrounding the Hambach Festival of 27 May 1832.
In Neustadt itself, the late Gothic Collegiate Church, with its imposing twin towers, dominates the cityscape. It is a city landmark and is considered the largest and most artistically valuable Gothic church in the Palatinate. The north tower houses the 14-tonne Imperial Bell, regarded as the world’s largest cast-steel bell that can be rung. Anyone wanting to explore the historic old town as a whole can join an old-town tour, which leads through winding lanes and past half-timbered houses, ornate fountains, the Collegiate Church and the historic market square. The accessible discovery trail is a pedestrian wayfinding system through the historic old town. People with mobility impairments and families with strollers can use it to explore the old town without barriers.
The museum at Villa Böhm offers another perspective on the city’s history. Housed in nine rooms on the ground floor, it traces almost 800 years of Neustadt an der Weinstraße’s history. Visitors can explore in different ways: through interactive stations at Hambach Castle, architecture and city views around the Collegiate Church, and an in-depth look at history in the museum.
Excursions by Rail, Bus and on Foot
The historic Kuckucksbähnel departs from Neustadt an der Weinstraße’s main station and travels via Lambrecht into the Elmstein Valley. The museum railway reaches Elmstein after a total journey time of 1 hour and 15 minutes, then returns to Neustadt. Bus route 502 runs from the main station to Hambach Castle every half hour. From the “Schloss” stop, it is about 400 metres uphill to the entrance. Check the timetable before setting off so you can include the bus in your day’s plans.
For those who enjoy walking, the Palatinate Keschdeweg offers a trail with a special seasonal appeal: it runs for around 60 kilometres from Neustadt an der Weinstraße to Hauenstein and is lined with sweet chestnut trees that drop their fruit in autumn. For cycling, there are leisurely routes around Neustadt to the wine-growing villages, while more demanding mountain-bike trails offer a different challenge. This makes it easy to choose your focus, from admiring autumn chestnuts to a more energetic ride on the trails.
Palatinate Specialities and Trip Planning
The local food and drink scene includes regional Palatinate specialities, Riesling and Pinot Noir, as well as experiences in wine taverns, seasonal wine taverns and at wine festivals. The range of activities stretches from exhibitions and old-town history to wine, regional cuisine and outdoor pursuits.
