Diez combines castle history and church architecture with trails along the water. The collections in the count’s castle tell stories ranging from geological eras long past to the early history of technology; three bridge arches shape the townscape by the Aar. There are also walking tours and opportunities for hiking and cycling. Which of these aspects interests you most may also influence your choice of destination and accommodation.

Museums and Architectural History in Diez

The museum in the count’s castle presents the history of Diez across four floors. Its collection spans a wide range: exhibits include Devonian fossils around 380 million years old, as well as displays on electrical engineering in the early modern age. Interactive features engage visitors through touch, hearing, smell and hands-on experimentation. This way, you can experience the collection not only through texts and display cases, but also with several senses.

Oranienstein Castle adds the history of the Dutch royal family to this perspective. The Museum Nassau-Orange in the castle is devoted to its past. Oranienstein Castle was built in the 17th and 18th centuries as a widow’s residence; direct ancestors of the Dutch royal family once lived there. On guided visits, you can see the historic rooms and the museum. Visits are possible only with a guide and by prior telephone appointment. As access arrangements may change, check the booking requirements before your visit.

The collegiate church also offers a way to explore the town’s history: it dates from the late 13th century and shows the transition from Romanesque to Gothic architecture. It served as the burial church for the Counts of Diez and the Princes of Nassau-Diez. The princely crypt is also associated with a black marble sarcophagus made for a princess. The architecture and memorial sites offer different reasons to explore Diez’s past.

The Aar, the Lahn and Trails for Active Days

The Aar was diverted and now runs through the new residential area in a canal-like channel spanned by three bridge arches. At the Lahn riverbank facilities, there is a canoe rest stop, a motorboat landing and the landing stage for the Wappen von Limburg. Water access and operating schedules may change seasonally; take this into account when planning.

For a walk through town, the signposted Culture Trail offers a self-guided tour lasting about two and a half hours. The Halfterweg starts at the Old Lahn Bridge. On the opposite side of the Lahn, the Lahn Valley Cycle Path runs through Sachsenhausen and continues downstream along the riverbank. The Diez tourism area also offers hikes and cycling tours along the Lahn and through the rolling landscapes of the Westerwald and Taunus. The stretch of the Lahn between Diez and Balduinstein is considered particularly scenic and unusually secluded.

At the confluence of the Aar and Lahn, Wassersport Danner offers canoe tours ranging from six to 28 kilometers. Availability and tour options may change; check before you travel. A self-guided town walk of about two and a half hours and canoe tours of different lengths offer various ways to shape your stay. When planning, you can weigh up whether town history, walking or a trip on the water should take center stage.

Diez in the Wider Rhein-Lahn Destination

The wider area also offers a variety of landscapes and cultural themes. The broader Rhein-Lahn destination includes the area on the right bank of the Rhine at the mouth of the Lahn, the Lahn Valley as far as just before Limburg near Diez, the southern foothills of the Westerwald towards the Lahn Valley, and the northern Taunus uplands between the Rhine and the Aar. The Roman Limes also runs through the district; visible remains are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Upper German-Raetian Limes. This regional context complements Diez’s attractions without attributing features of other places to the town.

The offerings differ in theme and format, so you can make your choice based on how you would like to spend the day. If you want to combine Diez with other destinations, the regional perspective can also help you explore the landscapes and history of the wider Rhein-Lahn area.
