Dahn: Rocks, Trails and Castle Views
Accommodation in Dahn
Sandstone rocks, hiking trails and a view of the castle complex give Dahn a distinctive character. The town is located in the Palatinate Forest / Northern Vosges Nature Park and is a state-recognised climatic health resort. For your stay, you can choose from longer hiking trails, rock destinations, mountain bike routes and the Felsland Badeparadies, each offering a different focus.
Rock Trails and Castle Views
The 12.7-kilometre Dahner Felsenpfad trail leads through sandstone formations and a rock crevice, as well as through the Wieslautertal valley. Sights along the way include Schillerfelsen, Schwalbenfelsen, Büttelfelsen, Lämmerfelsen, Wachtfelsen and Braut und Bräutigam. Its length and the sequence of named rock formations provide orientation if you would like to combine a hike with distinctive landscapes.
The Jungfernsprung, a rock massif around 70 metres high, rises in the centre of Dahn. It lies directly on the premium Felsenland Sagenweg trail and the Dahner Rundwanderweg circular trail. From the viewpoint at the summit, you can look out towards the castle complex of Alt-Dahn, Grafendahn and Tanstein, as well as the surrounding area. The Felsenland Sagenweg itself is 86.4 kilometres long and was named Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail in 2013.
Alt-Dahn also adds a built heritage dimension to the rocky landscape: the castle complex is among the largest in the Palatinate. Rock passages connect its castle levels to the keep. This means a stay in Dahn can take in both natural rock formations and the structure of a historic castle complex.
Compare Hiking and Mountain Biking
For cyclists, MTB Tour 13 Dahn Mitte in the wider Dahner Tal has a high proportion of trails across all difficulty levels. The route passes directly through Dahn. The Biosphären-Tour returns to its starting point in Dahn. The tour descriptions therefore differ: the Dahner Felsenpfad has a specific length, the Biosphären-Tour returns to its starting point, and the trail character is a defining feature of MTB Tour 13.
The tourism authority may revise the route details for MTB Tour 13. Check the route details before setting out; you should also check the Biosphären-Tour information against the tour description before travelling.
Swimming and Sauna Facilities
Felsland Badeparadies Dahn offers a family and leisure pool with a water slide more than 40 metres long. The sauna facilities include a premium sauna rated five stars, a 7,000-square-metre sauna garden and a Finnish sauna village covering more than 8,000 square metres. Alongside rock trails and cycling routes, these swimming and sauna facilities offer another distinct focus. Details about the facilities may change, so check the latest information before your visit.
Another Perspective on the SĂĽdwestpfalz
The SĂĽdwestpfalz offers a broader perspective on landscape and culture. The Palatinate Forest shapes the landscape here; well-maintained, marked trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills and past impressive red sandstone rocks. Near Hinterweidenthal, the 14-metre-high Teufelstisch is a popular destination for excursions. The Altschlossfelsen premium hiking trail leads to the massif of the same name, which is around 1.5 kilometres long.
Museums and castles also lend the Südwestpfalz its own character. Hauenstein’s German Shoe Museum, housed in a former shoe factory, presents the 140-year tradition of shoe production, the development of the shoe industry in the Südwestpfalz and the manufacture of shoes. Historic Gräfenstein Castle offers insights into medieval life. Berwartstein Castle is the only castle complex in the Palatinate that is still inhabited today.
