Hinterweidenthal: Devil’s Table, Planet Trail and Wieslauter Railway
Accommodation in Hinterweidenthal
Hinterweidenthal sparks curiosity with the 14-metre-high, mushroom-shaped Devil’s Table. There is also an adventure park directly below the rock, a themed trail and the Wieslauter Railway, whose route runs through the Wieslauter Valley. Each option has its own focus: geological features, individual park attractions, a longer route or a ride through forests and past sandstone formations.
The Devil’s Table and the Adventure Park
The Devil’s Table is located in the southern Palatinate Forest. Its distinctive shape is that of a mushroom; the rock is 14 metres high. Its formation is linked to the creation of the first sandstone layers around 250 million years ago. This striking shape can therefore also be seen as part of a very ancient landscape history.
The Devil’s Table Adventure Park is located directly below the rock. Its attractions include a 50-metre giant slide, a zip line and a water play area where water can be pumped, dammed and channelled. A picnic area is also provided. The park also has accessible parking spaces and toilets. Guests with mobility or visual impairments can enjoy many of the facilities. As the operation and condition of individual attractions may vary, check the latest information before your visit if needed.
Planet Trail, Railway and Cycling
The Planet Trail runs from Hinterweidenthal via Dahn to Bruchweiler-Bärenbach and is approximately 12 kilometres long. Stops with information boards about the planets give the route a consistent theme. Hinterweidenthal town centre and railway station serve as the start and finish points. The trail is accessible year-round; weather and trail conditions may affect your visit. Its long route sets it apart from the individual attractions at the adventure park: the trail has a theme running throughout, while the park focuses on specific facilities and activities.
The Wieslauter Railway connects Hinterweidenthal with Bundenthal-Rumbach. Its route runs through the Wieslauter Valley, passing sandstone formations and dense forests. Hinterweidenthal Ort station serves the town centre. If you are planning a train journey, check the timetable in advance.
Hinterweidenthal is also a starting point for cycling tours: well-marked cycle paths lead, among other places, into neighbouring Alsace. This offers another way to make your trip active. Routes and markings may change; check the latest information before setting off.
Brewery and Flammkuchen
The Brauhaus Ehrstein brewery and restaurant are located at the foot of the Devil’s Table in Hinterweidenthal. The beer is brewed by hand with regional ingredients in accordance with the German Beer Purity Law of 1516. The restaurant offers 25 flammkuchen specialities. Brewing methods and the menu may change. If this particular selection matters to you, confirm the current offering before your visit.
More to discover in the Südwestpfalz

In Hauenstein, the German Shoe Museum in a former shoe factory showcases the 140-year tradition of shoe production, the development of the shoe industry in the Südwestpfalz and the making of shoes. Gräfenstein Castle offers insights into medieval life; Berwartstein Castle is the only castle complex in the Palatinate that is still inhabited today.
