Merzalben lies in the heart of the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve. Here, trails through the countryside lead to a striking destination from the Hohenstaufen era: Gräfenstein Castle, also known as Merzalber Schloss, lies about 2 km east of the village. Well-preserved walls, towers, and a castle courtyard define the ruins; a striking red sandstone cliff supports them. In Merzalben, nature and medieval architectural history stand side by side, so you don’t have to choose just one kind of outing.

Castle Views and Local History

One particularly notable feature of the castle is its seven-sided keep, which is unique in Germany. The grounds offer panoramic views across the Palatinate Forest. The castle is freely accessible year-round. The steep path up from the Schäferei hiking car park takes about ten minutes; guided tours are also offered at the castle. If you’re interested in a guided tour, you can check the dates in advance.

Another viewpoint is Winschertfels on the 521-meter-high Vorderer Winschertkopf. From there, you can look out over Merzalben, Gräfenstein Castle, and the forests of the Palatinate Forest Nature Park. The viewpoint is freely accessible year-round and can be reached via the Palatinate Forest Trail. Free parking is available at the Schäferei hiking car park. The churches in the historic village center also tell of different periods of construction: the old parish church of St. Peter and Paul stands beside the newer parish church of the Holy Cross.

Hiking Between the Village, Castle and Cliffs

Hiking and cycling trails run through Merzalben and are maintained by the Palatinate Forest Association. The village is also on the Palatinate Forest Trail long-distance hiking route. From the village center, the trail reaches Gräfenstein Castle after a short climb and continues from there to Winschertkopf, a red sandstone rock formation above the Merzalbe valley. This lets you plan your route around two very different destinations: the castle with its walls and towers on one hand, and the rock and sweeping views across the landscape on the other.

With a little luck, you may spot hares, roe deer, wild boar, red deer, and foxes in the surrounding area. This adds a nature element to your trip planning that isn’t tied to a single building or fixed viewpoint. If you enjoy spending longer outdoors, you can combine the trails and destinations according to your interests; for the castle and viewpoint, the access routes and features described above provide specific points of reference.

Cycling Routes with Different Points of Reference

Merzalben lies directly on Route 1 of the Palatinate Forest Mountain Bike Park, making it a good base for mountain biking. The route is known for its high proportion of singletrack. Another option is the approximately 46-kilometer Gräfensteiner Land cycling route, which leads to Merzalben, where you can visit Gräfenstein Castle. This information can help you choose between a route with a high proportion of singletrack and a cycling route with an approximate total distance provided. Check route details and conditions before setting out.

Merzalben as a Place to Search for Your Trip

If you’d like to include the Palatinate Forest Trail, the climb to the castle, and the route to Winschertkopf in your plans, Merzalben offers a specific local point of reference. Cyclists can also take the two different types of route into account.

The wider region of Südwestpfalz also provides a way to orient yourself in the landscape: the Palatinate Forest defines the region, and well-maintained, marked trails lead through dense forests, over gentle hills, and past red sandstone cliffs. Near Hinterweidenthal, you’ll also find the 14 m-high Teufelstisch. These regional impressions complement Merzalben’s trails and castle destinations with further landscape features of Südwestpfalz.
