Greimerath is known as a Hochwald municipality in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. Trails, nature reserves and historic traces make the area interesting in different ways: the Greimerath Höhenweg, the Greimerath Family Walking and Adventure Trail, and several cultural and historical landmarks each offer a distinct focus.

Hiking between forest and open countryside

The Greimerath Höhenweg follows mostly quiet paths through the Greimerath Forest towards Judenkopf. Its landscape alternates between varied woodland and small areas of open countryside; natural streams and occasional sandstone outcrops add to the scenery. The route passes through the Ochsenwiese and Panzbruch nature reserves and connects Greimerath in Rhineland-Palatinate with Bergen in Saarland across the state border. As a premium trail, it is certified by the German Hiking Institute with 65 adventure points. Check trail conditions and crossings before setting out.

The Ochsenwiese shows that the Höhenweg also passes through a habitat with its own significance: the area covers about 60 hectares and provides a habitat for the endangered whinchat, common snipe and meadow pipit. In 2013, Taurus cattle were present in the Ochsenwiese; grazing was intended to help keep wet meadows open for rare animals and plants.

A trail for several generations

The Greimerath Family Walking and Adventure Trail offers another way to experience nature. It combines nature education with play activities and has a good trail surface; the route is designed for an outing spanning several generations. This clearly distinguishes its focus from that of the Höhenweg: here, nature interpretation and play come together, while the cross-border route and the landscapes of the protected areas take centre stage there. If you are planning an outing for several generations, this distinction offers practical guidance for planning your day.

Church, grotto and historic traces

Greimerath’s attractions include St. Nicholas Church and the grotto. A rampart at Köpfchen am Kälberborn is associated with Celtic settlement. Roman burial sites and barrows are also among the historic landmarks linked to Greimerath.
