Hermeskeil brings together art in public spaces, the history of technology and trails through wooded landscapes. Three sculpture walks lead to numerous sights in the town, including fountains, the former Franciscan monastery, cemeteries, memorials, sundials, Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) and other works of public art. You can shape your visit around the town’s history and art or its nature experiences.

Discover art and technology

The “People and Landscape” experience museum uses an interactive exhibition to share knowledge about the nature, landscape, and animal and plant life of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park. Alongside the outdoor trails, it offers another way to explore these natural subjects.

Six locomotives are housed in the shed at the Hermeskeil Steam Locomotive Museum; more can be seen on the grounds of the former railway depot. The Fire Brigade Museum presents the development of firefighting, from simple methods to modern firefighting technology, and displays both historic and modern fire engines. The two collections present the history of technology through different vehicles and themes.

The Junior Aviation Exhibition displays more than 100 original aircraft outdoors and in hangars. The exhibits include a Concorde with 150 seats; there is also a café. Check café access and visitor arrangements before your visit.

A guided walking tour of Hermeskeil shares stories about special places. The tours therefore offer different focuses: the guided tour centers on stories about places, while the sculpture walks lead to works of art and other sights around town.

Circular walks and hiking tours

The family rally through Hermeskeil is planned as a circular route lasting around two hours. It can be adapted for strollers or wheelchairs by skipping St.-Fargeau Park. This is a specific way to adjust the route to different needs.

The Hermeskeil nature discovery trail starts in the “Im Pflanzgarten” recreation area and is a 2.2 km circular route. Its themes include information about forest animals and plants, as well as stations for hands-on nature experiences. The Hermeskeil HK5 circular trail offers a different perspective on the landscape: it passes through the Lösterbach valley, alongside the Lösterbach stream and through dense forests.

A walk leads to Meister Bockart’s castle. It includes information about beavers and nature, as well as places to take a break along the Forstelbach stream. For longer hikes, stage HW-39-13 is another option: it runs from Hermeskeil to Reinsfeld, is 16.3 km long and starts at St. Martinus Parish Church on Martinusstraße. Information boards along the stage cover the life of Saint Martin.

Five Traumschleifen—premium circular hiking trails—run through the Hermeskeil collective municipality. They mostly follow narrow natural paths beside waterways and rock formations, continuing to viewpoints and natural and cultural monuments. These trails offer a different focus from the discoveries in the town itself, which center specifically on places, vehicles or art.

Nature park and choosing where to stay

The Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park is a cross-border natural and cultural landscape covering 2,055 km². It offers self-guided and guided hikes, experience tours and excursions focused on nature and culture. The information center of the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park Association is located in Hermeskeil.

Think about which experiences you want to shape your stay, then find accommodation in Hermeskeil to match.
