Palzem and Wehr lie directly on the Moselle and are surrounded by vineyards. Winegrowing, the river landscape and traces of Roman history give the area its distinct character. Palzem is best known for Elbling, a grape variety cultivated there since Roman times. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose from a range of different focuses: wine and village history, routes through the landscape or individual cultural attractions.

Vineyards, the Moselle and village centers

Some of the vines on the slopes above the Moselle grow on steep hillsides and must be harvested by hand. This work is just as much a part of local winegrowing as Elbling, which is especially characteristic of Palzem. The municipality also has woodland, meadows and smaller villages with historic centers. Here you will find renovated farmhouses known as Trierer Einhäuser. The vineyard landscape and established village structures stand side by side, without limiting you to just one way of exploring the area.

The Moselle landscape also takes on a different perspective by bike: near Palzem, the Moselle Cycle Route follows gentle vineyard hills and broad bends in the river; Luxembourg lies on the opposite bank. A route description dated 2019 identifies the start of the Moselle Cycle Route as being near Schloss Thorn and Palzem, at the Saarland border. Check current route conditions before setting off.

Trails for different abilities

The Moselsteig Trail passes Palzem’s vineyards. Other well-marked trails cross all parts of the municipality. One special hiking option is the Wehrer Rosenberg Moselsteig side trail, which offers views of the Moselle and Luxembourg. The route crosses steep limestone cliffs and narrow vineyard terraces and includes a via ferrata. It starts at the car park near the Wehr stop. Check current trail and access conditions before setting off; the Wehrer Rosenberg trail is not suitable for strollers.

For a different kind of outing, the Steine am Fluss sculpture route is designated as accessible. The 30-kilometer Steine am Fluss section of the Rhineland-Palatinate Sculpture Trail can also be explored by bike as a day trip. These trail options differ considerably: the Wehrer Rosenberg combines scenic views with steep terrain, while Steine am Fluss is designated as accessible.

Roman traces and regional culture

Palzem’s Roman bridge, dating from the early 1st century, connected the village with what is now Stadtbredimus in Luxembourg. You can view its reconstructed appearance on site using the free ARGO augmented reality app. This brings the historic connection between the two banks of the Moselle to life without requiring a lengthy overview.

A landmark visible from far away is the Helfanter Dom, the Church of St. Bartholomew, with its two imposing towers. The Bulldog and Agricultural Machinery Museum in Kreuzweiler displays historic machines and equipment; the museum also shows what farming used to be like. Schloss Thorn, meanwhile, is a winery with a history dating back to the 13th century. Visitors interested in local history can explore it from different angles: from Roman times and church architecture to the history of agriculture and winegrowing.

Taste Elbling and plan your stay

At a wine tasting at the Carlsfelsen winery, local Elbling takes center stage. You can enjoy wines with regional specialties on a terrace overlooking the Moselle and vineyards. Here, the connection to wine is tied to a specific named location, while also complementing the impressions of the vineyards and river that define Palzem.

Places to stay in Palzem include hotels, wine estates and a campsite right on the Moselle. Availability and the range of options may change, so check what is currently available before booking. Regional trains stop in Palzem and Wehr on the Wittlich–Trier–Perl route. As timetables and stops may change, it is worth checking the latest connections. The area’s different features can help you choose where to stay: wine and village centers, the Moselle landscape or particular hiking and cultural attractions. You can decide which of these will shape your stay before looking for suitable accommodation.
