Thörnich offers two distinct ways to enjoy a stay on the Moselle: cycling along the Moselle Cycle Path and following a steep, rocky in places trail through the vineyards. The Moselle Cycle Path passes directly by the Moselle loop; the Thörnicher Ritsch leads to a viewpoint above the Moselle Valley. When planning your stay, you can decide whether longer or shorter bike rides or the uphill walk should take centre stage.

Cycling along the Moselle loop

The Moselle Cycle Path follows the Moselle loop directly past Thörnich. From here, you can take longer or shorter rides upstream or downstream along the Moselle. The surrounding region is considered to have an extensive network of cycle paths. In the wider Trier-Saarburg destination, the district already has 492 kilometres of cycle paths. This figure provides a broader regional perspective; for a specific bike ride in Thörnich, you can follow either direction along the Moselle.

Thörnicher Ritsch: Vineyard trail and viewpoint

The Thörnicher Ritsch is a route of about 1.4 kilometres through the vineyards to a viewpoint above the Moselle Valley. Steep, rocky sections characterise the trail; sure-footedness and sturdy footwear are required. Check local conditions before setting out. This allows you to take the trail’s character into account when planning your day, without treating it as the same kind of outing as a bike ride along the Moselle.

From the viewpoint, you can see across the Moselle Valley from Leiwen via Thörnich to Pölich. A shelter and additional places to rest above the main rest area complement the viewpoint. This gives you two distinct options when planning: bike rides along the Moselle, or a vineyard trail with steep and rocky sections. Which option best suits your stay depends on how you would like to spend your time outdoors.

Trier-Saarburg as a wider destination

In the wider Trier-Saarburg destination, there are more touring options in addition to the district’s cycle paths. The Tälchen Tour is designated as a moderately difficult circular route; it is 37.28 kilometres long and takes approximately two hours and 45 minutes. It starts and ends in Konz. The route leads to the Wiltinger Saarbogen nature reserve and also recommends a detour to the waterfall in Saarburg’s old town. These details offer a separate regional tour for comparison, without equating it with the routes in Thörnich.

You can also discover Roman history in the wider Trier-Saarburg destination. In Tawern, the Roman roadside settlement of Tabernae is considered the origin of the town. It was established shortly before the start of the Common Era on the Roman main road from the Moselle via Metz to Rome. The pavilion houses an authentic model of the settlement at a scale of 1:75; the forest is also home to Tawern’s large reconstructed temple complex. The free ARGO app lets you view the complex on site at its original size and in a 360-degree augmented reality presentation.

Another historical landmark in the wider Trier-Saarburg destination is Saarburg Castle: large sections of the surrounding walls and a residential tower have been preserved. Several viewing platforms and the tower offer panoramic views of the Saar Valley. Alongside Thörnich’s Moselle and vineyard experiences, the wider destination therefore also offers distinct cultural and landscape attractions.
