Berndorf brings together hiking, traces of geological history and local culture. The Eifelsteig passes through the village, a cultural trail connects churches and sights, and the geopark trail explores a landscape of fossil-rich Devonian rock formations. When planning your trip, you can decide whether hiking, geology or culture will be your main focus.

Limestone basin, fossils and hiking routes

Berndorf lies in the Hillesheim Limestone Basin. Fossil-rich Devonian rock formations and nearby volcanic features shape the landscape. The local geopark trail includes routes through Berndorf and to the Rauheck quarry west of the village. Fossils from the Middle Devonian can be found on the quarry spoil heaps—a tangible point of interest for anyone curious about the area's geological history.

The Eifelsteig is also part of the village's hiking appeal: Stage 8 runs from Mirbach via Berndorf to Hillesheim. If you would like to include a long-distance hiking trail in your plans, you can locate Berndorf along the course of this stage. The Berndorf Cultural Trail offers a different focus. It follows the Stations of the Cross from the fortified church to the parish church and passes several local sights.

Cultural trail and notable places

Stops along the Berndorf Cultural Trail include the Plague Cross, Weinberg quarry, Marienkapelle, the Lehmkaul biotope, JischbĂĽhl and Ablasskreuz. Along the way, there are views towards NĂĽrburg, the NĂĽrburgring and Arensberg. QR codes at selected points provide information about local sights; digital content may change over time.

Ablasskreuz is probably a 16th-century niche cross made of red sandstone. Sellertkreuz stands in the forest north of Berndorf and is associated with the murder of a count's rent collector. Another historic site lies within the Berndorf/Kerpen district: the fortification on Weinberg is a Late La Tène structure approximately 300 metres long. These places provide different historical points of reference for the cultural trail and its surroundings, from wayside crosses to a fortified site.

The old fortified church was dedicated in 1965 as a memorial to Berndorf's war dead from both world wars. At Backes Eck, hikers will find a place to rest, Kneipp basins for arm and foot treatments, and maps for the onward route. The historic earth cellar there serves as a meeting place and exhibition space. Alongside the trails, these are places where remembrance, local history and practical wayfinding come together.

Planning your stay

Parking for the Berndorf Cultural Trail is available at the fortified church on Kiefernweg and at St. Peter's Church on KirchstraĂźe. Bus routes 538 and 539 connect Hillesheim/ZOB with Berndorf, Am Blumerich. Check the current service before travelling, as routes and timetables may change.
