The Ernstberg is Hinterweiler’s defining natural landmark: at 699.8 metres above sea level, it is considered the highest volcano in the Western Eifel. It lies within the municipality of Hinterweiler and the Vulkaneifel Nature Park. Those planning a trip here will find a clear focus on hiking and on a landscape whose basalt and lava formations reveal its volcanic character. There is also a tangible insight into local history and a regional perspective on the geology of the Vulkaneifel.

A circular hike as a practical day plan

The HeimatSpur Ernstberg Panorama Trail is a moderately difficult circular hike covering 10.2 kilometres. It starts and ends at the hiking car park between Hinterweiler and Waldkönigen and runs along the edge of Hinterweiler. Stops along the route include viewpoints, a lava grotto on the Ernstberg and the Wachtberg. The circular route and its distance provide a practical framework for planning your day; your own pace remains up to you.

Before setting off, it is worth checking for any temporary diversions. This lets you plan the hike around the stated distance without assuming the route will remain unchanged.

Basalt, beech forest and flowering season

The landscape around the Ernstberg is shaped by striking basalt and lava formations, old beech forests and protected honesty plants. The honesty flowers are white or violet; their flowering season falls in May and June, although the exact timing can vary from year to year. If you are out and about during this period, you can turn your attention to the flowers as well as the rock formations. Depending on the season, this adds another natural highlight to the volcanic landscape.

Local history on Hauptstraße

The Catholic branch church of St. John on Hauptstraße is described as a three-bay hall church and dates from 1860. The village also has a basalt beam cross on Hauptstraße, opposite the junction with Im Hunzenpesch. Alongside the landscape, the church and cross give your stay a tangible connection to local history.

The Vulkaneifel on a larger scale

To date, 77 maars have been identified in the Vulkaneifel. In addition, 350 eruption centres have been counted, around 270 of them from the more recent phase. The Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Vulkaneifel, which occurred around 10,900 years ago. These regional figures add another perspective on the volcanic landscape to the view of the individual Ernstberg.

Hikes in the Vulkaneifel holiday region also vary considerably in length: the Vulcano Trail is a 26.2-kilometre circular route east of Schalkenmehren. The eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long. The Vulkaneifel trails lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig. They are marked and signposted and include half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day hikes. By comparison, the 10.2-kilometre Ernstberg Panorama Trail offers a shorter designated hiking route. Conditions on the Vulcano Trail may change; check the route before your hike.

For a cultural perspective on volcanism, the Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun displays three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on volcanism in the Western Eifel. The Volcano House Strohn is an interactive museum featuring a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, approximately six metres long and four metres high. Both examples complement the natural landscape with engaging insights into volcanic formations and their history.
