Mückeln: Museum, Alfbach Valley and Cycling Loop
Accommodation in Mückeln
Mückeln can be explored in different ways: the “Zum alten Eisen” museum brings together historic household objects, a signposted cycling loop connects three places, and the Alfbach Valley bears traces of a historic pilgrimage site. These offer different options for planning your trip. First consider whether you would like to focus on a museum visit arranged by appointment, the cycling loop, or other attractions in the Volcanic Eifel. This helps make your search for accommodation more specific.
Everyday history at the “Zum alten Eisen” museum
The museum focuses on historic household items from past centuries. The collection ranges from irons, ironing stoves, mangles, waffle irons and butter churns to tools, radios and other objects. Household items sit alongside work equipment and technology. The variety of objects offers a vivid insight into everyday life in the past and can provide a talking point during a group visit. Visits are arranged individually; please book your appointment in advance.
A signposted cycling loop and another cycling route
A signed cycling loop of around twelve kilometres connects Gillenfeld, Strohn and Mückeln. Along the way, it passes the Volcano Museum, the Lava Bomb and Strohn Switzerland. These specifically named stops help describe the route. The Maare-Mosel Cycle Route is about six kilometres from Mückeln. The two figures answer different questions: one gives the length of the loop, the other the distance to the cycle route. Check the current route and signposting before setting off.
Traces of the Schutzalf Chapel on the Alfbach
The Alfbach Valley near Mückeln includes the Trautzberger Ring and the Sprinker Mill. Remains of the altar stones from the Schutzalf Chapel are located on the Alfbach. Schutzalf was historically a pilgrimage site where a fragment of the cross was kept. The place names and local traditions offer a different way to discover the area than the museum collection or cycling loop: here, the focus is on the historic significance of this former pilgrimage site.
The wider regional setting: the Volcanic Eifel
The wider regional setting of the Volcanic Eifel brings the scale of its volcanic landscape into focus. To date, 77 maars have been identified and 350 eruption centres counted there; around 270 of them date from a more recent phase. Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. These figures provide an overview of the region’s volcanic history.
Those who would like to explore this history through exhibitions can visit the Eifel Volcano Museum in Daun, which features three-dimensional landscape models of cinder cones, maars and mineral springs, as well as exhibits on West Eifel volcanism. The Volcano House in Strohn is an interactive museum. Its geological exhibits include a lava fissure wall around 30,000 years old, about six metres long and four metres high. At the Strohn Lava Bomb, visitors can explore how it formed and experience the effects of volcanism in the Eifel; check local access conditions before your visit.
Comparing hikes and mountain biking options
The Volcanic Eifel trails lead to scenic highlights on both sides of the Eifelsteig and are marked and signposted. They offer half-day hikes, day hikes and multi-day treks. Two specific routes illustrate different formats and distances: the eleventh stage of the Eifelsteig runs from Daun to Manderscheid and is 23.4 kilometres long; the Vulcano Trail east of Schalkenmehren is a 26.2-kilometre circular route. The stage and the loop can therefore be compared by distance and tour format.
Cycling options also extend beyond the individual signed loop. The Volcanic Eifel Trail Park has a mountain bike trail network around 750 kilometres long, with more than 17,500 metres of elevation gain. This regional network is on a different scale from the roughly twelve-kilometre loop between Gillenfeld, Strohn and Mückeln. Routes and trail conditions can change; check the latest information before setting off.
