Neroth combines a striking volcanic landscape with hiking trails and a layered local history. Nerother Kopf, the protected cultural heritage sites and the mousetrap museum give your stay a range of focal points—from geological history to the area’s former wire-making trade.

Volcanic landscapes around Nerother Kopf

Nerother Kopf is an extinct volcano that formed around 15,000 years ago. The wooded area is home to volcanic bombs, Krotzen (volcanic rock formations) and the remains of a millstone quarry. These traces connect the natural landscape with its geological and industrial history, giving you a concrete reason to see Neroth not only as a starting point for hikes, but also as a place shaped by its own volcanic origins.

The broader geographical context of the Volcanic Eifel reveals an even more extensive history: 77 maars have been identified there to date, along with 350 eruption centres, around 270 of them from the more recent period. Ulmen Maar marks the most recent volcanic eruption in the Volcanic Eifel, which took place around 10,900 years ago. For Neroth itself, the local landmark is Nerother Kopf, around 15,000 years old.

Castle ruins, cave and local history

Protected cultural heritage sites associated with Neroth include the ruins of Nerother Burg and the area around the millstone cave. The cave can no longer be entered. The surviving castle building is a ruin dating from the 15th century. Two gables, each twelve metres high, and the hillside wall remain—striking architectural details that reveal the history of the place.

The mousetrap museum explores Neroth’s former wire-making trade. Theodor Kläs introduced wire weaving in the 19th century; the museum’s centrepiece is Josef Pfeil’s workshop. This takes you from the area’s volcanic origins to a later local craft tradition. The Nerother Wandervögel also have a strong historical connection to the place: they were founded in Nerother Cave on New Year’s Eve 1919/20.

Local clubs keep traditional customs alive. These include celebrations such as Radschieben (wheel rolling), the Easter egg race, raising the maypole, the village festival and the Christmas village. These examples offer a glimpse of local traditions without requiring you to plan your trip around a single event.

Hiking and planning your day

The long-distance Eifelsteig trail passes directly by Neroth. One specific circular hike is “Around Neroth: Forests, Volcano, Ruins”: it is of moderate difficulty, 15.6 kilometres long and takes 4 hours and 10 minutes. The route follows a wide loop around Neroth through woodland and fields and follows marker 1. It is marked throughout with a white 1 on a blue background.

There are different hiking options: a circular route with a specified distance and duration, as well as the long-distance trail that passes directly by Neroth. The stated duration and moderate difficulty rating can help you fit the circular hike into your planned day. Check the route and trail markers before setting off, as route details may change and signs along the way should be followed.

Local amenities and finding the right accommodation

Neroth has three establishments serving regional cuisine. There is also a salt cave among the local amenities. Free parking is available at the church in Neroth and at two hiking car parks along the L27. If the salt cave, an establishment serving regional cuisine or a particular car park is important to your plans, check availability in advance.

For a hiking-focused day, the circular route offers a specific time frame; Nerother Kopf, the castle ruins and the museum appeal to other interests.
