Discover Gardelegen: History, Activity and Nature
Accommodation in Gardelegen
Gardelegen showcases its history in the green ring of the rampart promenade, in the remains of its former fortifications and in churches that can be visited year-round. The Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Memorial and various opportunities to spend time outdoors round out the experience.
Old Town, Ramparts and Churches
The rampart promenade forms a green ring around Gardelegen’s Old Town. From there, you can enjoy views of historic buildings and the town moat. The circular rampart walk is 2.7 kilometres long and takes around 45 to 60 minutes. Check local access conditions before your trip. The two names refer to different aspects of a visit: the promenade describes the green ring and its views, while the circular rampart walk, with its own distance and duration, helps you plan your time.
Remains of the former fortifications include the ruins of the Stendal Gate, the Salzwedel Gate and sections of the town wall. From 2003 to 2007, Gardelegen’s ramparts were restored in accordance with heritage conservation standards; they are also part of the state-wide Gartenträume network. The churches also shape the visitor experience: tours are offered at St. Mary’s and St. Nicholas’s. St. Mary’s Church and the partially ruined St. Nicholas’s Church can be visited year-round. As current visiting arrangements may vary, it is advisable to check in advance.
Memorial and City Tours
The Feldscheune Isenschnibbe Gardelegen Memorial is located at the historic site of the Gardelegen massacre. It commemorates 1,016 concentration camp prisoners from many European countries who were murdered near Gardelegen on 13 April 1945. As an international place of remembrance, information and encounter, it gives this part of the town’s history a focus of its own. The grounds are open to individual visitors and groups during the day; admission to the memorial is free. The documentation and visitor centre houses a permanent exhibition that opened in 2020. Check the latest access information before your visit.
If you would like to explore the town with a guide, Gardelegen city tours can be tailored to visitors’ wishes. They take in important buildings and squares; visitors using a walking frame or wheelchair can also be accommodated. Ask the Tourist Information Office about current availability.
Outdoor Activities and Discoveries
At Bürgerpark, you’ll find a wide range of play and sports facilities, including a skate park, a volleyball court, a boules court and fitness equipment. There is also a water-treading pool by the ramparts, supplied by the Laugebach stream; check the latest facility details before using it. The Future History app lets you explore Gardelegen through historical photographs and texts about specific locations. Before your trip, check whether the digital service is available.
The wider area around Gardelegen encompasses fields, heathland, meadows and forests to explore on foot or by bicycle. This lets you combine your time in town with a stay focused more on the landscape, without requiring a particular pace or fixed route.
Cycling Routes in the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel
Gardelegen lies on two cycling routes in the Altmark: the Altmark Circuit and the Milde-Biese-Aland Cycle Path. In the wider destination of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, the Altmark Circuit offers a longer regional perspective: it is almost 500 kilometres long and passes through forests and meadows and by numerous brick and fieldstone churches. For much of its route, it runs close to the Green Belt Germany in Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, connecting nature, history and culture.
The Altmark Circuit consists of ten stages with varying surfaces: asphalt, concrete track slabs, surfaced field and forest tracks, sandy farm tracks and quiet roads. If you’re planning a cycling tour, these surfaces offer a practical guide when choosing your route. The wider destination of Altmarkkreis Salzwedel also has cycling and hiking trails in the Drömling, as well as observation towers, information centres and guided nature-watching tours. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve there includes areas within the municipalities of Stadt Klötze and Hansestadt Gardelegen. Check current facilities and tour options in advance.
