Barleben offers several distinct ways to explore the area: St. Peter and Paul combines medieval architectural features with a Baroque-era rebuilding history, while trails along the Kleine Sülze and the Mittelland Cycle Route offer different highlights. You can focus on cultural history, an information-rich walk or a cycling tour, rather than giving every experience equal weight.

St. Peter and Paul: Medieval Core, Baroque Rebuilding

The plastered hall church of St. Peter and Paul features Gothic forms dating from the 14th century. The lower section of the tower, the sacristy and the masonry of the nave date from this period. The church was partly destroyed between 1632 and 1636; it was rebuilt in the Baroque style from 1681 to 1699. The contrast between the surviving medieval sections and the later construction phase makes the building’s different historical layers clear.

Inside, the space is defined by a two-storey gallery, a flat coffered ceiling and the Magdeburg council pew with bull’s-eye panes. Several historic gravestones in and around St. Peter and Paul are of particular historical interest. The church’s history can be explored through its exterior architecture, construction phases, furnishings and stone memorials.

Exploring on Foot and by Bike

The route along the Kleine Sülze offers a different way to explore: it follows natural trails and passes the Barleben Nature and Village Nature Trail. Information boards along the trail provide explanations and combine the walk with educational stops. Check the route again before setting out.

The Mittelland Cycle Route links Barleben, Ebendorf, Meitzendorf and Rothensee in a loop that returns to Barleben. Barleben Town Hall is listed as the starting point, but you can also join the loop anywhere along the way. From Barleben, the route follows an avenue to Ebendorf and a cycle path alongside the road to Meitzendorf.

The section towards the Rothensee Ship Lift offers a view of Lake Jersleber. An optional detour leads across the trough bridge at the Waterways Cross and underneath the Mittelland Canal. The observation tower at the Rothensee lock offers views of the lock’s technical installations and the surrounding region. The options along the loop therefore differ: you can follow the circular route or plan the described detour as an additional option.
