Discover Pretzsch: Castle, Park and Elbe Floodplains
Accommodation in Pretzsch
Pretzsch brings together Renaissance history, Baroque garden culture and the expansive Elbe floodplains. Pretzsch Castle is located on the left bank of the Elbe in section L, right on the Elbe Cycle Route; the floodplains shape the landscape around the town. The local history museum and various opportunities to explore the castle park round out the experience. During your stay, you can choose from a range of ways to explore the town, from architectural history and gardens to local history and nature.
Castle history between the Renaissance and Baroque
Between 1571 and 1574, an existing castle rampart was transformed into a grand Renaissance castle. Christiane Eberhardine of Brandenburg-Bayreuth redesigned Pretzsch Castle according to her princely vision. The Baroque park at Pretzsch Castle was created in the early 18th century. The Renaissance architecture and park offer distinct points of interest: one focuses on the transformation from a castle rampart into a grand building, the other on the creation of a historic garden. This sequence reveals the castle’s history through several different forms of design.
Garden Dreams in the castle park
Since 2017, Pretzsch Castle Park has been part of “Garden Dreams,” a network of historic parks and gardens in Saxony-Anhalt. The Garden Dreams Picnic Day takes place every year and invites visitors to enjoy the park’s special atmosphere, relax beneath old trees, and bring culture, nature and good food together. A bookable guided tour of the park or an event at Pretzsch Castle offers an introduction to its historic gardens; check availability before your trip.
Town and local history at the museum
The Pretzsch local history museum displays a 19th-century classroom and an old general store. The two exhibits introduce visitors to different aspects of everyday life: learning and trade. Visitors can also get an overview of the town’s and region’s history, local customs and historic crafts. The classroom and store bring these themes to life, while the museum’s broader exhibits offer further insight into local history and crafts. The museum thus complements the grand history of the castle with glimpses of everyday life and local traditions.
