Weißenfels brings together courtly history, music, local history and active experiences. Neu-Augustusburg Castle, the Heinrich Schütz House and the Gustav Adolf Memorial offer different cultural highlights; outdoors, options range from the animal park to activities on the water and along the Saale Cycle Route. To plan your trip, you can first consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Castle history and music

Neu-Augustusburg Castle was built between 1660 and 1694 on the foundations of the former Weißenfels Castle. Until 1746, it served as the residence of the ducal line of Saxe-Weissenfels. The castle’s construction and use give it a clearly defined role in the city’s history. The castle church of St. Trinity adds sacred architecture to this historical focus: it is early Baroque and considered one of the most beautiful churches of its kind in Central Germany.

The Heinrich Schütz House offers a distinct perspective on music history. It is the composer’s only surviving original residence; the exhibition, spread across three floors, covers his life and work. Alongside courtly history, music lovers can also explore the life and work of an individual composer.

Museums and historic memorial sites

The Weißenfels Museum presents exhibitions on the Duchy of Saxe-Weissenfels and the city’s history. The museum is also home to the largest shoe museum in the former East German states. This places courtly and local history alongside a museum subject that offers a very different perspective on everyday culture.

The Gustav Adolf Memorial commemorates the autopsy of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf, performed in 1632 in the former Geleitshaus. Its themes also include the Thirty Years’ War and the Battle of Lützen: a large diorama depicts the battle with around 10,000 tin figures. The specific location and the large number of figures give this historical subject a different format from the biographical and local-history exhibitions.

Views, animals and activities

The Bismarck Tower in Klemmberg Park offers sweeping views across the Saale Valley. The Weißenfels home nature garden offers another way to spend time outdoors: around 200 animals live across 12,600 square metres. The grounds include landscaped enclosures, a bog garden, a rock garden and the “Path of the Senses” sensory trail. Wildlife watching, the garden areas and the trail each offer a different focus for a visit.

More active experiences round out the options. The Weißenfels all-weather toboggan run offers rides at speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour; mini golf and other activities are also available. When planning, you can distinguish between the quieter nature and animal-garden options and more active leisure activities, without limiting your stay to a single itinerary.

Boating and cycling options

The central boat rental in Weißenfels offers rowing boats, pedal boats, motorboats that do not require a licence, canoes, inflatable boats and kayaks. The selection ranges from human-powered boats to motorboats that do not require a licence. The Weißenfels bicycle and boat rental is also located directly on the Saale Cycle Route and offers bicycles, including e-bikes. When planning your day, you can therefore decide whether you are more interested in a boat or a cycling tour; the options are clearly distinct in terms of what they offer.

Weißenfels and the broader travel destination of Burgenlandkreis

The broader travel destination of Burgenlandkreis offers further distinctive cultural and visitor attractions. Naumburg Cathedral has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1 July 2018. It is considered one of the most significant cultural monuments of the European High Middle Ages; its architecture, stained-glass windows and sculptures are described as unique worldwide. Neuenburg Castle was founded around 1090 by the Thuringian count Ludwig the Springer.

Archaeology and the history of astronomy also shape the region’s attractions: the approximately 75-metre-wide Goseck circular enclosure is considered the earliest archaeological evidence of systematic sky observation; it was fully excavated and precisely reconstructed at its original location. The Arche Nebra is a modern visitor centre at the site where the Nebra Sky Disc was found. Its offerings include guided tours, activities and special exhibitions, as well as a digital planetarium with a 22-minute show about Bronze Age astronomical knowledge.
