Ballenstedt: Castle Culture and Parkland
Accommodation in Ballenstedt
Ballenstedt combines a distinctive castle history with an expansive landscape park and a range of cultural themes. The residential palace, a landmark and the town’s main attraction, shapes the cityscape. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural history, exhibitions, theater and time in the great outdoors.
Castle ensemble: from monastery to film history
Ballenstedt Castle is a Baroque complex with three wings. Most of it dates from the first half of the 18th century and incorporates parts of the former monastery complex from the 11th and 12th centuries. The former monastery church contains the burial place of Margrave Albert the Bear (c. 1100–1170) and his wife Sophie. A stone donor figure of Uta of Ballenstedt can also be seen at the castle. The world-famous figure was created by the Naumburg Master.
The castle theater adds a later architectural accent: the early Neoclassical theater building was constructed as a court theater in 1788. Today, the theater hosts touring productions and a variety of events. If you would like to combine your visit with a performance, it is best to check the current schedule.
The north wing houses the Ballenstedt Castle Film Museum, with a collection on cinema and film history spanning more than 100 years. The movie theater has 53 original cinema seats. The permanent exhibition “The Anhalt Harz Forest Through the Ages,” also in the north wing, explores the history of forestry and hunting in the Anhalt Harz Forest. In the south wing, the “Courtly Living” exhibition presents the living conditions and lifestyle of the Ascanian family in seven rooms, shortly before and after 1900. Together, the castle ensemble offers different ways to explore the past: architecture and monastery history alongside courtly life, film and forestry history.
The Jewish cemetery on Hoymer Straße is also part of the town’s cultural history. As an important memorial site, it commemorates the Jewish culture of life that the National Socialists eradicated during the Third Reich.
The castle park and trails around Ballenstedt
Ballenstedt Castle Park lies on the western edge of the town and is a work of garden art from the 18th and 19th centuries. The 29-hectare landscape park has valuable old trees and offers visitors peace and relaxation. It is part of the “Garden Dreams – Historic Parks in Saxony-Anhalt” network. Ballenstedt is also located in the UNESCO Global Geopark Harz – Braunschweiger Land – Ostfalen. The castle and park offer two distinct focal points for your trip: historic interiors and garden art on the one hand, and expansive parkland on the other.
If you are interested in walking routes, the RW1 circular trail offers a way to explore Ballenstedt in stages: it runs in 14 stages around the town. Information boards guide you along the route at 14 prominent points in and around the town. The “Ballenstedt Blick” viewpoint, on an old industrial spoil heap, is also located on the RW1; from here, you can look out over the townscape. The forests surrounding the town are suitable for hiking.
Nearby, the Teufelsmauer-Stieg trail runs for more than 35 kilometers through forests, flowering cultural landscapes and nature reserves, linking Ballenstedt with Quedlinburg, Thale and Blankenburg. The town also recommends Falkenstein Castle, above the Selke, as a hiking destination in the middle of a nature reserve. An exhibition at the castle explores the origins and influence of the Sachsenspiegel, probably the most important German-language law book of the Middle Ages. For cycling tours to explore the surrounding area, the tourist information lists the R1 cycle route and the D3 Germany Route.
Choose the right focus for your trip
You can organize the sights around your interests: the castle, theater and museums offer a cultural focus, while the park, forests and hiking trails provide other options. If you are traveling with family or people with different interests, this range can help you plan each day without letting any one activity define your stay. When looking for accommodation in Ballenstedt, you can therefore start by considering which themes you want to focus on during your trip.
