Gernrode lies about seven kilometres south of the World Heritage city of Quedlinburg and is a starting point for hiking and exploring the Harz. Different interests come together in the town: the Collegiate Church of St. Cyriacus, historic rooms in the Old Elementary School, woodland trails and activities at Osterteich pond.

The Collegiate Church and the history of the school

The three-aisled eastern crypt of the Collegiate Church of St. Cyriacus is the oldest part of the church. It offers a tangible starting point if you are interested in its architectural history. Small groups can take a special guided tour of the Holy Sepulchre in the collegiate church. Check the current arrangements for visits in advance.

At the Old Elementary School in Gernrode, visitors can see a black kitchen and an old vaulted cellar on their way to a classroom furnished in the style of around 1900. Two smaller rooms also house a valuable mineral collection. This brings historic schoolrooms together with a very different subject: minerals. A small Latin school “in the castle” is documented in Gernrode in 1533; by 1585, a girls’ school is also mentioned there. These dates offer two specific glimpses into the town’s educational history.

Woodland trails and water at Osterteich pond

Four Nordic walking routes start at the Haferfeld car park, catering to experienced walkers, those returning to the activity and beginners. They range from about 2.5 kilometres to just under 15 kilometres and run exclusively along good woodland trails. The different route lengths provide a practical comparison for planning your day; choose a route that suits how much time you want to spend outdoors.

At Osterteich pond, there is a floating bathing island where you can relax, sunbathe or jump into the water. You can also book a stand-up paddleboarding course there. Check the current course details before your visit. An informative walk through Gernrode offers insights into the town’s history; if you plan to join one at a specific time, check the current tour schedule.

Quedlinburg for a further cultural highlight

Around 2,100 half-timbered houses dating from eight centuries still shape Quedlinburg’s townscape. Thanks to the number and high quality of its half-timbered houses, Quedlinburg is considered an exceptional example of a medieval European town. The Collegiate Church of St. Servatius is also one of the masterpieces of Romanesque architecture. Its treasury is an exceptionally well-preserved collection of medieval art treasures; it includes a knotted carpet dating from around 1200, described as the oldest surviving knotted carpet in Europe.

The former collegiate buildings now house the Castle Museum, with exhibitions on the history of the town and the abbey. They include reception and audience halls furnished in an elegant style. Check the current access arrangements before visiting. The Half-Timbered Museum in the Ständerbau building explores Quedlinburg’s half-timbered architecture from the 14th to the 19th century, as well as restoration and reconstruction work in the World Heritage city. Models there illustrate the development of half-timbered building styles.

There are different time options for exploring the town: a walk through the historic old town up to the castle hill takes around 120 minutes and introduces the town’s history of more than 1,100 years. Check the current dates in advance. The Quedlinburg Bimmelbahn offers a 45-minute city tour from Marktstraße via the lower castle hill, through the historic New Town and back to Marktstraße. Comparing the two durations can help you plan your day.

When looking for accommodation in Gernrode, the mix of local history, woodland trails and water can be a useful starting point. If you also plan to visit museums or take a city tour in Quedlinburg, factor these destinations into your choice of accommodation location and daily itinerary.
