Harzgerode combines historic buildings with outdoor experiences. Castle history, a nature trail and interactive stations each offer something distinctive. There is also a natural toboggan run, which can be used for a winter hike when there is too little snow. You can plan your trip around whether you would rather explore architectural history or spend time in nature.

Experience and discover nature through play

The natural toboggan run descends 1,100 metres from the Harzgerode plateau, winding down into the Selke Valley to the promenade in Alexisbad. Along the way, it drops around 75 metres in elevation. Tobogganing requires enough snow; when there is too little, the route is also suitable for a winter hike.

The Harzgerode nature trail offers hands-on activities and sensory experiences: it includes a quiz, a barefoot path and a sound organ. If you are looking for a change from historic buildings, you will find three different ways here to experience and engage with the surroundings.

History is also presented in a special way at Harzgerode Castle. At the HARZKUGELEUM, a beechwood ball travels through different themed worlds together with visitors. Its shape and weight convey information about the Lower Harz, mining, nature, and local and regional history through the ages. It is worth checking the seasonal opening hours when planning your visit.

Play and interaction take centre stage on the HARZGERĂ–DER KUGELsPASS: along the route, there are two playgrounds and eight stations with ball runs. Multilingual audio stations round out the experience. They are available in German for adults and children, as well as in Russian, Danish, English and Chinese. Unlike the nature trail, the KUGELsPASS combines ball runs and playgrounds with information presented in several languages; each offering has its own focus.

Castle, church and industrial history

Harzgerode Castle was rebuilt between 1549 and 1552 and served as the residence of the Harzgerode line of the Anhalt princely house from 1635 to 1709. The Renaissance building has a stair tower and a round tower. St. Mary's Church represents a different era: it is a Baroque building dating from 1697 to 1699. Together, the castle and church offer a glimpse of different architectural styles and historical periods.

The Köthener Hütte is another point of historical interest. It was built in 1897 by the Köthen branch of the Harz Club as a shelter on Kapellenfelsen. In Mägdesprung, the Carlswerk illustrates the working culture of the early industrial age: mechanical processing machines from the first half of the 20th century have been preserved in their original condition, along with a wooden crane from 1890. The staff’s lockers, workbenches and holiday postcards complete the picture. The shelter and the Carlswerk offer historical perspectives that differ from the architectural history of the castle and church.

The Harzgerode Advent Trails are a recurring event in Harzgerode. This pre-Christmas experience for the whole family takes place every year on the second Sunday of Advent; dates and programme vary. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the specific event dates in advance.

Plan your trip and accommodation to suit your needs

For travel by train, the connection described first goes to Quedlinburg; from there, Harzgerode can be reached by the Selke Valley Railway. Check the current timetable for your travel date. Compare the location of an accommodation option with your own plans rather than assuming a particular order for visiting the destinations.
