Gommern: Lakes, Cycling Tours and History
Accommodation in Gommern
Gommern lies between the Elbe floodplains and the foothills of the Fläming. Water, forests and architectural history give the town its many facets: wetlands within the town provide natural habitats for water-loving plants and small animals, while gravel pits and cycling routes invite you to enjoy active days. Churches and castles also offer their own ways to explore the area's history.
Water, Forests and Gravel Pits
Fuchsberg is a large protected shifting dune. Right next to it is the Kulk, a flooded former quarry with a sandy shore, observation tower, paved paths, rock garden, playground and pedestrian bridge. This landscape brings together a distinctive dune formation and a varied shoreline.
A smaller natural feature can be found in the parish garden: its wetland habitat includes a 350-square-metre body of water, a shallow-water shoreline zone and an adjacent perennial garden. Open water and planted garden areas sit side by side. The wetlands within the town also provide natural habitats for plants and small animals that depend on water.
A recreation area has developed around nearly 30 gravel pits, with outdoor swimming pools, campsites, bungalow settlements, restaurants and amenities. Five more gravel pits surrounded by dense pine and birch forests invite visitors to swim and hike. If you plan to spend time by the water, check current bathing conditions and the facilities available at each location before travelling.
In the Dannigkow recreation area, Elbe meadows and extensive forests invite visitors to hike and cycle. Plattensee campsite is located there, with a swimming lake next to the Middle Elbe Landscape Protection Area, the Romanesque Route and the Elbe Cycle Route R2. Check current access and facility conditions before visiting.
Cycling and Choosing the Right Base
There are 218 kilometres of signposted cycling routes around Gommern, leading to local sights. Bridge, church and castle tours can be done independently or with a guide. They are about 25 to 35 kilometres long and take five hours. If you are planning a guided tour, confirm its availability in advance.
In Dornburg, the R2 runs directly through the Elbe floodplain meadows. Gommern is also close to the Elbe Cycle Route, in a lake district with pine and mixed forests, and on the Romanesque Route. The connections are also a useful guide for your journey: there are direct links to federal highways 184, 246 and 246a, and the A2 and A14 motorways are nearby.
The Gommern Information Centre offers leisure tips, brochures and leaflets about Gommern and the surrounding municipalities; check its current offerings before your trip.
Moated Castle, Churches and Castle History
Gommern Moated Castle combines a historic castle setting with a restaurant, its own brewery, a hotel and a newly designed courtyard. There are also medieval feasts and castle festivals, as well as a wedding room. Several cultural and culinary themes come together in one place.
In Vehlitz, the late Romanesque St. Stephen's Church shapes the historic townscape. It is dated to around 1150; inside is a late Gothic three-winged carved altarpiece. Dornburg Castle was built between 1751 and 1758 as a widow's residence for Princess Johanna Elisabeth. The history of the site of Leitzkau Castle Church dates back to a Premonstratensian monastery founded in 1138/39.
Menz also tells its story through the shape of the village: the horseshoe-shaped settlement lies like a peninsula in a deep bend of the Elbe. This distinctive settlement pattern offers a different view of the cultural landscape from that of the castle and church towns.
The wider travel destination of Jerichower Land
If you extend your travel plans to the wider destination of Jerichower Land, you will find more regional highlights. The Elbe Cycle Route runs through the district from north to south. The Elbe-Havel Cycle Route also follows the canal through the natural landscapes of Jerichower Land, connecting the Elbe Cycle Route with the Havel Cycle Route.
Jerichow Monastery is considered the oldest brick building in northern Germany and a landmark of Jerichower Land. Its garden was designed after historical models; visitors can learn about the monastery's history in the monastery museum. In Burg, the fully preserved Historic Tannery offers an insight into leather production. Leitzkau Castle is another important regional building: it is considered a significant example of Weser Renaissance architecture on the Romanesque Route and the most important castle built in this period in the Middle Elbe region.
