Vatterode lies in the Wippertal valley and within the Harz Landscape Protection Area; the Wipper River flows through the village. Nature, a historic church and a small railway line give this destination a variety of character. Vatteröder Pond serves as a local recreation area for residents and visitors. You can get to know Vatterode through its scenery and recreational opportunities, as well as its architectural history and geology.

Pond and Park Railway in the Wippertal Valley

The Vatterode Park Railway runs along a route of around 1.3 kilometres from the village through the Wippertal valley to the Vatteröder Pond recreation area. The route thus connects the village, the valley and the recreation area on a short ride. You can also take a walk at nearby Vatteröder Pond—a different way to spend time around the recreation area.

The park railway season begins every spring. Visitors can ride in open passenger cars on selected weekends, weather permitting. Rides are therefore limited to certain weekends and suitable weather conditions. As exact dates may vary from year to year, check the current operating days before your trip.

Getting to the Park Railway

The park railway can be reached by car; there is a car park right next to Mansfeld-Schleife station. Alternatively, you can take the Wipperliese railway to Vatteröder Teich stop. The Wipperliese also stops in Vatterode. This gives you a choice of ways to get to the park railway, by car or by train.

The Architectural History of St. Boniface Church

St. Boniface Church in Vatterode is one of the oldest buildings in the Mansfeld region. The church comprises three parts: the nave, dating from the first half of the 18th century; a chancel tower with origins in pre-Christian times and Romanesque elements; and an apse. The chancel tower has a tall roof turret. The different components and periods make the church a fascinating subject for anyone interested in architecture and regional history.

The furnishings also bring together distinctive pieces, including a Baroque altar, an organ case and a baptismal font. A stucco panel is dated to the 11th or 12th century. Its date in the 11th or 12th century offers a different historical perspective from the 18th-century nave. Together, the architectural features and furnishings invite you to consider the building’s history and details separately.

Geological History at KlippmĂĽhle

The outcrop at Klippmühle near Vatterode reveals a very different timescale. Metamorphic rocks from the Ordovician period are exposed there, dating back around 470 million years. The outcrop is opposite the Wipperliese railway’s Klippmühle stop. While St. Boniface Church tells the story of architectural design and furnishings, the rock outcrop points to a far more ancient geological history. These different subjects offer more than one possible focus for your trip, without requiring you to have the same interests.

Choose the Focus of Your Trip

If you would like to focus on nature and recreation, the pond, walking opportunities and seasonal park railway offer some specific options. Those especially interested in architectural history will find an unusual combination of building features and dates at St. Boniface Church; the outcrop at KlippmĂĽhle adds a geological dimension. When choosing accommodation, it may help to first decide which of these aspects matters most for your trip.
