Discover Landsberg: Romanesque architecture, nature and the rock pool
Accommodation in Landsberg
Landsberg combines medieval architectural history with porphyry hills, a route through the town and time in the water. A stay here can bring together cultural discoveries, walks and swimming, without every day having to follow the same theme. The most striking landmark is the St. Crucis Double Chapel; other churches, an art project in GĂĽtz and brewery tours also offer reasons to get to know the town from different perspectives.
Romanesque architecture and medieval history
The Romanesque St. Crucis Double Chapel is the prominent above-ground remnant of Landsberg’s Margrave’s Castle, dating from the 12th century. The Chapel of the Holy Cross is the only visible above-ground evidence of an important high and late medieval castle. Landsberg is also a stop on the Romanesque Road in Saxony-Anhalt; on the Saale-Unstrut South Route, the Double Chapel is one of more than 20 Romanesque buildings.
Visits follow a specific seasonal schedule: from May to October, the Double Chapel is open to visitors on Tuesdays and Thursdays; public guided tours take place on Sundays during the same season. During guided visits, you can take in views of the surrounding countryside. If the chapel is central to your stay, you can plan your day around these visiting opportunities and check the dates in advance.
Landsberg’s St. Nicolai Church also has a long history: it dates from around 1200. Together, the chapel and the town church offer a reason to explore the town’s ecclesiastical architecture and past.
Hills, walking routes and art
The Spitzberg, Pfarrberg and GĂĽtzer Berg are porphyry hills between Landsberg, GĂĽtz and Hohenthurm. They are highlighted as places for nature walks and discovering rare plants. Alongside the buildings, the landscape is therefore a focus in its own right for exploring the surrounding area.
The Luther Trail passes through Landsberg on its route from Brehna via Niemberg and Brachstedt to Petersberg. If you are interested in art, nearby GĂĽtz offers another point of interest: its Church of St. Anna and St. Katharina has a stained-glass window project with 21 panels, involving Markus LĂĽpertz. The church is in GĂĽtz, not in Landsberg town centre.
Water and local experiences
Landsberg’s Felsenbad outdoor pool lies at the foot of Kapellenberg. Facilities include 50-metre swimming lanes, diving facilities with a 5-metre tower, a non-swimmer pool with a slide and a baby pool.
The Landsberg private brewery also offers brewery tours. If you want to make a tour part of your plans, check the current tour packages in advance. Alongside architecture, countryside and swimming, a brewery visit can also be a possible activity.
Getting there and choosing accommodation
Landsberg railway station connects the town with the Halle–Berlin railway line. Check current train services separately. When choosing accommodation, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: the seasonal visiting opportunities at the Double Chapel, nature walks, art in Gütz, swimming or a brewery tour. These interests give you a concrete starting point for your accommodation search; you can then plan chapel visits and brewery tours using the information provided for each.
Another cultural highlight in the Saalekreis district
In the wider Saalekreis destination, Wettin Castle is a cultural attraction in its own right. It extends for about 500 metres along a porphyry ridge running beside the Saale and is divided into the Lower, Middle and Upper Castles. The outdoor grounds are freely accessible to visitors, and guided tours of the castle complex are available. These details add to the picture of the wider Saalekreis destination, while Landsberg’s own highlights are the Double Chapel, its churches, hills and Felsenbad outdoor pool.
