Klietz between lakes, nature trails and history
Accommodation in Klietz
Fields, meadows and forests surround Klietz. Its lakes, nature trails and traces of history offer different ways to spend your stay: observe the landscape and wildlife, explore the trails on foot or by bike, and learn more about Klietz’s past.
Lakes, heathland and nature watching
Klietz Heath is considered particularly attractive to nature lovers and mushroom hunters. Lake Klietz lies in a former arm of the Elbe and is about 3.1 kilometres long, 175 metres wide and an average of two metres deep. These dimensions give a more precise description of the lake; the local trails provide additional guidance for nature watching and walks.
The trail along Lake Großer Klietzer See loops around the lake and passes through parts of Klietz Forest. It starts and ends at the Landgasthof Seeblick, is marked with “Wandersmann” signs and is approximately 7.5 kilometres long. Check the markings before setting off. Along the way, the trail crosses an old railway line and leads to a bathing area with a playground and lawn. Information boards along the route introduce local plants and animals.
Nature watching also depends on the time of day and year: in spring, you can observe nesting swans and other waterbirds from the upper section of the trail. Near the bathing area, you can watch bats in the evening and at night from spring through autumn, and listen to them using a detector. You can plan your outing according to whether you mainly want to see birds during the day or bats in the evening and at night.
Trails and traces of history
The nature trail at Lake Kleiner Klietzer See also starts at the Landgasthof Seeblick. It is about 2.8 kilometres long, making it considerably shorter than the approximately 7.5-kilometre loop around Lake GroĂźer Klietzer See. The different trail lengths give you a concrete point of reference for planning your day. Lake Kleiner Klietzer See is also considered a popular fishing spot.
On the eastern shore of Lake Kleiner Klietzer See, the rampart and its excavations are regarded as historical evidence associated with Klietz’s Slavic origins. An information board at Klietzer Wall explains excavations at a Slavic rampart site. The location of the rampart is still faintly visible in the meadow. Here, history and landscape meet in tangible traces: the archaeological subject of the information board and the rampart’s barely visible outline.
Another glimpse into the past is the restored Klietz post mill, a technical monument. Visits are possible by prior arrangement. If you want to include the mill and rampart in your travel plans, take this advance-booking requirement for the visit into account.
Numerous cycling routes shape the area around Klietz. Walking, cycling, nature watching and historical sites therefore offer different focal points for your stay.
