Discover Lauta: Tornoer Pond, garden cities and history
Accommodation in Lauta
In the south of Lauta, Tornoer Pond offers two sandy beach areas and several leisure facilities: a volleyball court, a playground, a snack bar, an outdoor event stage and fishing opportunities. If you are travelling with children, the playground is a practical place to visit; volleyball and fishing offer different options. You can tailor your visit to the activities that matter to your group. Before your visit, check the current condition of individual facilities and whether they are being operated.
Leisure at Tornoer Pond and on themed trails
An approximately two-kilometre themed trail leads from Tornoer Pond to Johannisthal. Fourteen signposted stops explore early industrialisation, the raw materials used in glassmaking and the area's mineral resources. Two covered shelters provide places to rest and picnic. The route combines a clearly defined distance with a historical and geological theme. If you are interested in industrialisation, glassmaking or mineral resources, these are the main subjects covered along the trail.
The approximately 39-kilometre Garden City Trail covers a different scale. It connects the protected garden cities of Marga, Lauta and Erika in Laubusch and passes through their planned residential areas, gardens and green spaces. Comparing it with the themed trail can help you choose a route: the latter is defined by 14 stops over around two kilometres, while this much longer cycling loop focuses on settlement planning and open spaces.
History in Laubusch
In Laubusch, the Local History Museum explores the history of the former Sorbian settlement of Lubus, the mining community of Laubusch, local schools and churches, and the development of lignite mining. Cultural history therefore forms a distinct focus alongside the leisure and route options. Visits must be arranged in advance; please confirm the date again before your visit.
Cycling in Bautzen District
Other cycling routes in Bautzen District vary in landscape, circuit and theme. The Bautzen North Tour is a 43.1-kilometre loop from Bautzen via Quatitz, Großdubrau, Milkel, Klix and Malschwitz and back to Bautzen. It passes through the heath and pond landscape and along the nature trail in Crosta. The Hills and Valleys Route is a regional loop through the West Lusatian Hills in Bautzen District. The Krabat Cycle Route is also a regional loop and follows in the footsteps of Krabat, the hero of Sorbian legend, in Bautzen District.
Two long-distance cycle routes also have sections in the region: the Mittelland Route runs from Zittau to Aachen; one section passes through the Upper Lusatian Highlands in Bautzen District. The Spree Cycle Route runs from its source in Upper Lusatia to Berlin. Its section between Taubenheim and Zerre lies in Bautzen District. Regional loops are therefore complemented by long-distance cycle routes whose full itineraries extend well beyond the district.
